I am feeling very depressed right now, cuz I think I have just fried my NIC port on my PS3.
Background..
I got a used PS3 that was sans HD. I put a 120 GIG'er into it and booted up. Everything seemed to work fine. I had to format the new HD and all. Being I didn't get any controllers or anything, I used a PC Keyboard.
So, I am going thru everything and checking my settings and all. I get into the NETWORK Settings and configure them. Everything manual, using the internal 192.168.x.x internal conventions.. Everything configures OK.
I get to a point where it says I have to upgrade my PS3 OS.. I figured, "what the hell, why not.."... So I upgrade and the system reboots..
So far, so good..
DOH!! First stumbling block... I have upgraded to version 2.20 and it says I need to hit the PS button on a "wireless controller".. OK.. I guess no keyboard shortcut this time.. OK, time for Plan B...
I take out the 120G I put in and replace it with a new 120G drive... (I have several).. I let the system detect and format the new drive... I then take the PS3 from my workbench area to hook it up to my big screen in the living room.. After formating and futzing with the DISPLAY SETTINGS (HDMI @1080i, baby!!

) I once again turn to the NETWORK Settings. Set everything up again and WHAM.... "ethernet cable is not connected" .. I look and it IS connected... So, I futz here and there and no luck. So, I revert the DISPLAY Settings back to 4:3 and such and take the unit back to my workbench. No change.. "ethernet cable is not connected!" even though it is..
OK, now let me give you a little rundown on my setup.. I have a home network that includes 5 PC workstations, 3 XBOX 360s and 4 XBOXs... They are all connected to a 16port 100BaseT router. The Router is, in turn connected to a Linux Box (Fedora7) which acts as a Firewall and Server. This entire setup is connected to a dumb-configured DSL Modem on a 6MBIT DSL connection. Now, I don't mean to brag or toot my own horn, but when it comes to Network connections and setup, I do have more than two brain cells to rub together...
So, anyways.. Back to the PS3 issue.. Now, here is where things get dicey and where I get depressed. Checking my router and the PS3, I see ZERO activity on the NIC indicator. Either on the Router or on the PS3. It's as dark as my mood right now...
I have tried several different cables with no joy.... I have hooked the PS3 directly to the DSL modem. No luck...
I set up a WIRELESS router, just to see if I could connect to ANYTHING with the wireless.. When I finished and went to the TEST CONNECTION, it tried for about a min or two and then said OBTAIN IP ADDRESS -- FAILED
During the time it was trying, I looked at the Wireless Indicator (Next to the HD LED in the front, right??) and it never blinked or lit up or anything.
It's not possible that the PS3 came in to me with a fried port because it connected initially just fine and downloaded the 2.20 update...
Sorry for the length of this, but I wanted to give as much detail as I could..
So, someone please tell me I did not fry my NIC port. The more I read, the more I am thinking (IE HOPING) that the update caused the problem and the hardware is fine..
Thanx in advance for any assistance given...
