Kojima: MGS4 too big for 50 GB Blu-ray disc

From joystiq.com:
Quote

It's not much of a shocker to learn the latest (and final) installment in the Metal Gear Solid series is a sizable one -- MGS games have a history of being big (and beautiful). However, a recent interview with series creator Hideo Kojima revealed a startling fact about MGS4 -- Kojima complained that a few features had to be cut from the game so it would fit on a Blu-ray disc. As format fanatics already know, that means the game takes up nearly 50 gigabytes of space.

Just one question comes to mind, what the hell is wrong with a multi-disc game. I would much rather have a two disc game than a cut down version of a game.

maybe price is the issue, if they used 2 discs it might reduce their profits, or increase the price of the game? i dunno, just my thoughts

I think Sony likely asked MGS4 to fill the disk to stay on the 'blu-ray forever' bandwagon and justify blu-ray for games.  Either that or it's 3-4 hrs of HD FMV cutscenes .. (yawn) - personally if I wanted to watch a movie - I'd buy one ..

Lets hope this one doesn't have to be loaded onto the HDD first - It'll be ~2 hrs before you get to play it .. lol

Somehow I'm reminded of when stories like this ran when the ps2 came out...  While I'm sure the game will be great, filling up a 50GB BD is no indication of a game's feature set, complexity or even length.  I'm skeptical that the game uses the space efficiently, but we'll see what all those GB are used for when the game is released later this year.

MGS has never used FMVs

They're probably repeating the same data many times so the long access times of Blueray wont be an issue.
*BRx2 in PS3 has access times excessing 350ms.*

Every long laser jump for data causes serious delays in data transfer.
You need smart cashing (takes memory!) or instalation on HDD.
OR you repeat data so laser position doesn't change drasticaly and drive in PS3 doesn't need to spin up / spin down to keep (REQUIED!) in PS3 2xBR speed (BR in PS3 is CVL - http://en.wikipedia....linear_velocity )

So to not to have nessessary MANDATORY install (think 5GB in Hot Shot Golf 5, Lost Planet , Devil May Cry) basic data will probably be repated for every level / streaming segment.

Not the first game, not the last on PS3 uses this method of reducing problems with slow BR drive.

Personally I don't care if it loads a chunk onto the HDD. It's hardly life threatening losing 15 minutes of my life. perhaps i will have a cup of tea whilst it loads on. It's not like it has to do it every time or like it really does take 2 hours.
Same with the game, I won't care about the little bits taken out as i never had them to start with. you can't miss what you never had.
The only thing I care is that it is long enough as to take a while to complete and that it plays and looks good. The technicalities are irrelevant once involved in the game.

Haha told you blu-ray sucks you shouldn't of chosen it, lmao I'm just kidding

I'm sure I read somewhere they wanted commentary with cut-scenes kinda like PiP on some movies, as long as core game play is all there then I will buy it.

Too true, if people didn't get caught up in special effects from movies 10 - 40 years ago then there really wouldn't be much point in making the film!

p.s. Does the ps3 not support 3 layer disks?  tongue.gif

And that my friend is exactly how I feel!

The only thing I really care about is the end result. I'm sure this could only be a good thing...

and about the user above saying
"They're probably repeating the same data many times so the long access times of Blueray wont be an issue."

I highly doubt they are doing that... That method seems way too cheap/pathetic for Sony or Konami to do, trust me... thats not it tongue.gif

Hmmmm.  I wonder how much of that is going to be video rendered on a supercomputer?  When my wife, then girlfriend, first introduced me the the PSOne I crapped my pants when I first watched Parasite Eve load up.   At that time I remember the playing with a Voodoo 3000 and I was trying to overclock the snot out of my celeron 300s all in the name for some killer speed for graphics and games.  And then I watch this PSOne thing, but wait..... start playing the game.  The graphics during game play were crud.

Now back to MSG4 and a 50 GB Blu-ray.   How many cut scenes are there and whats actually going to be rendered in real time?  Sounds like a supercomputer movie generated smoke screen to me. =)
