no modchip yet. Many hackers aren't as interested in hacking it since Sony made the smart choice of allowing Linux to run on it out of the box.

I really hope it doe not get any modchips any time soon...let's let sony make some revenue out of their system first....

What I do hope is some Linux distro for the PS3 becomes mature enough to have decent hardware graphics acceleration and good usage of the damn  oh so-called CELL CPU. I'd really love to play SNES and N64 games with the sixaxis XD

^ It has nothing to do with Linux and everything to do with Sony restrictions.
Ironically, a modchip would open the GPU up.

Just to make your own game would be damn expensive.  A burner goes for 550 dollars for  a descent one.  each blank disc runs you 20 or more for a single layer, and I dont know of any software that could rip one anyways

Theres plenty of software for ripping ps3 / blueray. Have you been living in a cave?

You are right about the cost. That is the #1 thing preventing the console from being 'hacked' (yes, we're talking backups here).

The problem is that with the cost of media and burners, the 'avarage joe' hacker just doesn't have the money to persue hacking the ps3. Going blueray was sony's only saving grace. The ps3 and the xbox360 are similar in their security, so thats not the issue. It all comes down to cost for the hackers out there.

There is a way to simulate the Blueray disk using an external image (stored on a USB disk).

You plug some wire just after the blueray lens, the motor and magie! You can dump an image or replay the image.

I have bought a PS3 yesterday. I dont give a **** about the ablity to downloading and burning games without buying them.

Still i want the PS3 to be hacked. I have a European PS3 without backware ablity. I have bought this trashcan for 400€ and i can not play PS2 game on it. I really hate sony because of that.

Also i want to be able to network between my PC and PS3. I want to be able to play all kind of files on the internet on my PS3, like movies and music, i want to be able to put emulators on it...

So dont hold down people for making modchips, one like the Xecuter for the xbox. I want wireless access to my PS3...

This thing really *** without a modchip. Really it does. And for employees of sony pls put a file on the network that would make able to play PS2 games on the PS3.

Sorry for my bad english

There are people developing modchips for the PS3, I have been searching the net for weeks, but the one that seems most promising that ive found that will boot backups is the Belzar modchip, it seems like this chip isnt being talked about very much anywhere but the website http://www.belzar.com/ says that its in beta testing right now so hopefully it will be available soon, here some info ripped from the site:

    * Works on all PS3 models
    * Works on all PS3 regions (USA, JAP, PAL,)
    * Direct Boot of PS3 original, import, and backup (copied) games
    * Direct Boot of PS2 original, import, and backup (copied) games
    * Supports multi-region Blueray Movie Playback
    * Supports multi-region DVD Movie Playback
    * No config disc needed - it just works!
    * Transparent stealth operation
    * Integrates proven belzar Intelligent Code Modifying System
    * No awkward USB interface - just insert DVD and play!
    * Supportsall upto date titles
    * Ultra-low power consumption; does not interfere with normal PS3 operation
    * Only 12 wires to solder
    * No external PC/laptop needed
    * completely upgradeable firmware, via Belzars usb 2.0 interface

Dave

seems to be a lie, check this post. the guy who runs the website for this so called modchip also runs the hacktronics website. Where the owner of the Hacktronics website claims to have received a sample and that it is working. So the same person is owning both website, claiming on the first that he sent samples and on the second stating that the sample is received and is working correctly. Seems lik ebig bullshit to me. just whois yourselve.
