HOLY SHIT! that was quick......good job sony, maybe a price drop will be in order. I think  this supports my theory that MS is not leader when it comes to price; they have always been a follower. Even though they are in better position than sony, i still feel MS is not gonna be the first to drop.

Since Xenon (XBox360 CPU) and CELL (PS3 CPU) are made from the same company (IBM) the switch will probably be simultaneous, so this means that when XBox360 will drop PS3 will drop too.
XBox360 users were waiting for a cooler, quieter and less power hungry CPU from a long time yet they'll get it when PS3 users will get it too.
Either advantages will be the same for both, they'll keep the same operating speed so we'll get lower prices for XBox360 and PS3 (more CPU in a wafer, less defective CPUs and less "overheating" units).
PS3 could get another advantage since a SPE is disabled because is expected than up to 1 of 8 can be defective, so the process could make the eighth SPE alive and kicking, but probably Sony will keep it disabled anyway for backward compatibilty or rearrange the chip internals to get rid of the unused unit (trusting the better manufacturing process) for a smaller die size.

The cpu is not what overheats so it will not make a difference in that regard. Also the cpu in the 360 is made by ibm the cell is made and supported by several comapanies including ibm. One has no effect on the other.

Sony is just pushing this so soon so they can cut cost and make profit, I am all for it.

Conte, the switch won't be simultaneous, the company that produce the 360 cpu has stated that production of the 65nm won't start until june, so they are infact several months behind. Oh and mlmadmax if I were to guess the ps3 cpu probably runs up to 45 degree celsius or above at full operation. So even if the gpu do probably run a lot hotter if the cpu will run cooler the ps3 will run cooler.

Epsilon it might be a ultra cool blue led on it or something, I hear that is all the rage in the modding community smile.gif

so this means that all the current ps3 wont even sell at all since everyone will be waiting for the price cut/cooler machine smile.gif

first of all: BOOOOYAAAAAHH!

IBM is the hardware producer for both CELL and Xenon (and IBM use CELL for his server), so when they'll switch the production process (upgrading the factories to use the newer 65nm process) they'll switch both products at once.

no that does not mean that they upgrades both factories to use 65nm process, it's two different technologies that have two different processes of manufacturing....

so what! its not about who is going to cut the price first its about having the cheapest price, and even after the price cut The 360 will be the cheapest one simply because the pis3 has the blueray and that aint going cheap any time soon.

actually the cell is nearly the same price as the blu ray drive so if that gets cheaper then it WILL make a difference on the price.

I feel sorry for you if you base all your shopping decisions on which product is the cheapest.

I prefer to base my shopping decisions on value per dollar. I think that is something everyone should.

Conte they are developed by the same company, that has nothing to do with who manufactures the chip.

here's a though about prices of the machines
the ps3 contains some "new" technology hdmi 1.3 wifi, blu-ray, cell, bluetooth gyro etc...
these are all very expensive now, but as with all new technology we will see very big price drops, so the ps3 will probably decrease its production costs at a faster pace then the 360. in 2 years I'd even wager that there won't be any significant price difference in production costs between the ps3 and 360

The company expects to stop taking losses on PS3 hardware in the next term, Sony CFO (chief financial officer) Nobuyuki Oneda announced at the financial briefing. One means of doing this will be through smaller chip sizes.
(...)
Oneda said that Sony is not consdering a price drop right now, although something could be possible in 2 or 3 years.

The cell is not developed solely by IBM as I stated before they are very different products. Also REDWOLF pretty much ended this debate because according to that article the 360 will switch to 65nm way before the PS3 will.

If moving down to 65nm will save money, why wouldn't MS change as soon as they could?

I think you might be right. Nintendo Wii will drop first, but certainly not the PS3.

Microsoft announce over 6 months ago(<correct?) that they would be working on the 65nm processor. I read somewhere that the 65nm Xbox 360 would be coming around this holiday season: the perfect time for a new processor, and the perfect time for a price drop.

I don't think that Sony will be able to ship it out by holidays 2007. One year is way too small of an amount of time. I'd expect more like the second quarter of 2008 or later.
