It Has Begun !

The Japan launch just recently started and some lucky guy has already modded his PS3 by upgrading the hard drive to a 120GB model.

I wouldn't call opening up the hdd bay and swapping the 60GB drive for a 120GB drive a mod, more of an upgrade that anyone can do........

Hmmm that was quick.....

I wonder if that was a SATA or an IDE drive?

What happens when you start the PS3 up with no hard drive, I'm guessing not much lol jester.gif

Now all we need is a 1-2TB drive to backup Blu-Ray games to the hard drive through Linux laugh.gif

If you don't care about having your PS3 open and a bare HD laying around I am thinking you could just connect a 3.5 drive to the PS3. There might be some size limitations but if any 2.5" SATA drive works any 3.5" drive should work too.

I really wish the 360 could do this since I have a bunch of hard drives laying around that I could use for my 360 on the 22nd.

I'd worry about the power draw from the 3.5" drive.  They typically use 2-3 more watts that 2.5" drives.  You might be able to use an external enclosure, but then you have to worry about powering the HDD on and off.

There are a few new low power 3.5 HDs that only use one platter which should by the safest bet.

From what I have seen so far there is no way for Sony to know if you had another HD attached so I would just connect one and see what happens.

Looking up some data from Hitachi's site so you can see hard numbers:
The CinemaStar 7K160 low power series is offered in 80-160GB capacities:
CODE
Power
Requirement +5 VDC (+/- 5%)
  +12 VDC (+10%/-8%)
Dissipation
Startup current (max. A)
 1.9 A(+12V) &
 1.3 A(+5V)
Idle (W) 5.9

The 5K160 laptop drives are 5400 RPM, SATA, and offer capacities from 40-160GB:
CODE
Power
Requirement +5 VDC (+/- 5%)
Dissipation (Typical)
Startup (peak, max.) 5.0W
Read (avg.)  1.8W
Write (avg.)  1.8W
Active idle (avg.) 0.85W
Low power idle (avg.)  0.65W
Standby (avg.) 0.25W
Sleep 0.2W

Seagate 7200RPM 2.5" drives:
http://www.seagate.c...omentus7200.pdf
Seagate 5400RPM 2.5" drives:
http://www.seagate.c...omentus5400.pdf
Seagate 7200.10 3.5" drives:
http://www.seagate.c...uda_7200_10.pdf

I wonder if the PS3 can use 7200 RPM laptop drives?  As they have slightly higher power draws than the 5400RPM 2.5" drives, which is to be expected.  The stock drive is 5400 RPM and I can't read Japanese:

Not that the difference would be noticeable on the PS3, but just more options available.

yup wink.gif.  Sucks too because the largest 2.5" HDD is 200GB and cost roughly $200.  3.5" are much more economical, but require more power and typically generate more noise and heat, and of course take up more space in the console.

Not to mention that the standard 3.5" HDD's are a lot faster (RPM's) then the standard 2.5" HDD's.  And the 2.5" suck for pc gaming compared to the 3.5".

Standard 3.5" HDD's are just better all around then the POS 2.5" HDD's.
