Xbox Virgin Climbing The Walls
« on: March 24, 2009, 07:54:00 AM »

Hi Guys, I have reached the end of the line and have asked the same question on a few other forums and each time I've been advised to come here, so here we go.....lol

I am begging for help (as most newbies do I guess).

Anyway, I have an old Xbox Crystal that's been modded with an Xcuter (sp??) chip.  I have just bought myself an old second hand black (1.6) Xbox that I wanted to softmod (everything is in place and the softmod already checks out).  I have since decided that I want to put a bigger HDD in the Softmod Xbox and this is where my troubles began.

My PC is new, it doesn't have any IDE drives in place, only SATA (HDD and Optic drive), so I travelled miles to use a friends PC in order to carry out these mods, I cannot get back to my mates house, so I am stuck with my Vista machine with NO IDE access......

I have followed THIS GUIDE, and did everything that followed, the only exception being that on the locking step my options were different, I clicked what I thought was right, but the option was different to the one suggested.  I brought the drive home, plugged it into the un chipped Xbox and it comes up with an error, so I figure I clicked something wrong.  I then tried THIS GUIDE, but sadly when I connect the previously molested 80Gb HDD it just comes up with an error on boot up, so I think that I have locked the drive.  I have found some software that will unlock the HDD so not too worried about that, sadly it only works with IDE access (which I don't have), so I need something that will work in Vista.  When I connect the drive via USB it shows on my system, but only with 010101010101 etc showing as the drive name and I cannot format or access the drive at all (which adds to my suspicion that it's locked).  SO I have tried hotswapping the drive into the modified Xbox and running slayers to unlock the drive, format the drive, do anything with the drive and it simply locks up.......

So I now have a chipped Xbox that works fine
A Softmodded Xbox that works fine with the smaller drive, but not with the bigger drive
80 WD HDD that is locked and no way of unlocking it.......

Can anyone help or tell me if I am wasting my time?, CAN I unlock the drive in Vista or should I give up for now?

The softmod was easy, but this HDD is melting my brain.......

HELP.......

Cheers,
Rich,
Teesside

When you put the 80Gb disk in the softmodded Xbox, which error are you getting?

Hi Heimdall, when i put the 80Gb drive in the softmodded Xbox, I get error 21, when I put it in the chipped Xbox I get error 06 (which points to HDD error)

Cheers,

Rich.

Not quite. Error 6 in the chipped box means the disk is locked to another eeprom - which it is! The good news is that Error 21 in the softmod box probably means that the disk is locked to that box, so should be repairable.

Try cold booting with Frosty's Rescue disc. If it works report back, and I'll explain how to fix it from there.

Edit: While you're on downloading Frosty's Rescue disc, get hold of a copy of Kingroach NDURE 3.1 and either Slayers or CASH - you'll need them to repair the softmod.

Hi Heimdall, right, with Frosty's rescue disk in the softmodded xbox and the 80Gb HDD, it simply ticks over, then goes back to the ERROR 21 screen (no dash prior to this), if I put the original HDD in then the front screen of Frosty's shows, if I try hotswapping the drive from there there's not much point as the info on the front screen still shows the info from the original HDD, not the 80Gb version, if I DO hotswap and try to unlock the HDD it comes up with DONE, then going to settings it says UNLOCK ERROR (which I guess is to be unexpected), I cannot do anything with the chipped Xbox as I just get the same error prior to the DVD booting up.......

Hmmmm..

I can think of two ways to go from here. One is to use lxhdm - run it on the chipped Xbox, then hotswap the 80G disk from the softmodded Xbox to the chipped Xbox and follow the lxhdm instructions.

The second is to hotswap the 80G disk from the softmodded xbox to your PC (you might need to fiddle with the BIOS, or pause the PC after it does its POST and then hotswap), then allow your PC to boot Vista and use Xplorer360 beta 6 to copy the stock C and Kingroach files to the Xbox drive.

Have a look at both methods, see which you prefer! Whichever you go for, you need the stock 5960 C files from Slayers / AID / CASH, and you need to build a Kingroach NDURE 3.1 softmod file set. The only option you need to select in Kingroach is the kernel version - leave the rest at the standard settings. If you don't know your kernel, select the generic one!

With the 80gb drive inserted, will the 1.6 box boot game discs? Remember to cold boot 'em - that is, make sure they're inserted before the XBOX logo comes up during the boot sequence.

If so, try booting a Live compatible game disc and attempt to log on. No need for an account or attached network cable, with any luck the disc will repair the dash and make the drive boot like a stock one would.

Halo 2 and anything later will install the latest dash (that being the aforementioned 5960).

From there you should be back on "familiar ground" (assuming it works).

I don't recommend hotswapping more then you strictly need to - every attempt brings you one step closer to bricking something. Work out your method of attack first then follow it, don't hotswap while experimenting.

Regarding the installation of Kingroach via Xplorer360, can you actually do that? I mean, I got the impression from somewhere that the files needed to be copied across to the drive in a certain order for that particular softmod to work... Never really researched the matter though, for all I know there's a set of instructions which states what that order is!  laugh.gif

c:\xodash\ernie.xtf
then
c:\xodash\s.xtf (if used)
then
c:\xodash\xbox.xtf

thats it..

So you'd copy over all the other C partition files before or after this? Or does that not matter, so long as those three files are in the correct order?

see if you can mke the xbox boot to an error 12 by unplugging the ide cable from the dvd drive and booting it.
If you get the error 12 then your drive should be unlocked then what you can do is hotswap it to the chipped xbox and boot slayers on the that xbox and first format the C: and E: drive then install the stock MS dash then just softmod it the way you softmodded the stock drive and format F: to get the rest of the space on the drive

if you dont get the error 12 you can try to unplug the ide cable from the hdd when the white microsoft logo appears

I always copy the font files after the other C partition files, but it doesn't matter which order you do it in, so long as you copy the font files in the right order. Actually, I copy the whole lot, then delete the font files, then copy the font files across again one at a time, because it simplifies the process! It's described in paragraph 5 of the Kingroach manual.

@steveo1978: I don't think Slayers allows you to do that, so that's why ldotsfan wrote lxhdm - to allow you to boot with one disk then swap to another unlocked disk and rebuild it.

@Heimdall: Actually I wrote lxhdm with a different scenario in mind: hdd upgrade from a working softmod xbox. I haven't tested it in the scenario you described.
