Fail Xbmc Update > Won't Boot
« on: February 18, 2009, 09:36:00 PM »

Ok, so here's the deal.

I updated my bios earlier to iND 5003, and all it good. I have it configured to load up XBMC first. f/apps/xbmc/default.xbe

I updated my MC360 skin, because i presumed it was pretty old because i installed everything using slayers 2.7 disk.  So i updated that, and i see it wasn't selectable on the skin menu, so i presumed my XBMC was out of date. I downloaded the latest SVN release of it and updated it. When i booted it up i got a black screen after the blob intro, but i still had sound. So i read on in the readme file and jumped to the conclusion that i needed to update the .xbe and corisponding .cfg files. I FTP'd them accross, this was obv the wrong thing to do as now my xbox hangs at the X screen 9after the blob)
it's loading my bios config file from the C drive when it boots as i have my custom boot stuff, but then it freezes.

The cfg file just pointed to the xbe file, so i think there is my messup. But i can't FTP to my box to remove. I tried using my old stock hdd to get me into slayer, then try and swap the drives but that froze slayer.

What can i do to sort this out?

Probably true.

You didn't wipe all the old files before doing the update. This might be because you simply didn't try to do it, or because you attempted to update XBMC while running it.

Er, you mean to say you replaced XBMC's XBE with the "SHORTCUT by TEAM XBMC.xbe" file?

Yes, i renamed it to 'default.xbe' then overwrote the old one with it.

Thanks for your quick reply

Dammit, that was a shortccut wasnt it. It's meant to be booted from somewhere else, and the cfg file pointing to where the real .xbe file it. Damn i'm an idiot. (well, it is almost 4am  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) )

What would be the best way to gain access to the files and remove it?, then i can update it properly.

Cheers

So to get this straight, the console won't boot off your Slayers disc unless you insert the old HDD?

(Keeping in mind that you'll need to cold boot the disc to get it to work with the larger drive, that is to say, insert it, power off the console, then power back on again).

Yeah, that's correct. It won't boot into slayers on a cold boot. With the old hdd, it takes about a minute then it lets me in.

Odd. Slayers should boot with either drive. Must be something to do with your BIOS.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

Anyway, bung the problem drive in your PC and load up Xplorer360 (check my sig). With this you should be able to browse the drive and manually sort things out.

(You'll want to wipe out everything from the old XBMC install except for the UserData folder, which holds all your personal settings. Then just dump the new version in it's place).

If Xplorer360 won't read the drive, then grab a copy of LiveInfo and check the locking status on it. If the drive is locked, then you'll need to get that disabled.

To do this, bung your old drive into the console and have ConfigMagic do an EEPROM backup. It'll store this on the root of the E partition. Copy that over to your PC, grab a copy of XBoxHDM, and read it's documentation re the Linux based locking tools. Note that it's a two step process; first you open the lock, then you disable/remove it completely.

With the lock removed Xplorer360 should be able to sort out the rest. Note that since the drive is formatted for use with an X-Box, Windows Explorer won't list it. Telling your computer to format the drive will only cause you more problems and is, um, not recommended.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Cheers for that, i found various unlocking/viewing tools from the usual places, but none of them see/acknowledge my drive. it's the only drive on the IDE cable, i've tried it in master, slave and cable select. Nothing is working.

For best results, stick it on the end of the IDE cable with the jumper in Master position.

Did those tools you tried include XBoxHDM/LiveInfo?
