So a couple months back I bought a 50" Sony Grand Wega SXRD TV. (model KDS-R50XBR1)
It was advertised as a 1080p TV. It's spec manual states that it's native resolution is 1080p.
Imagine my surprise when I got my PS3, connected it via HDMI, and can't receive a 1080p signal. After F'ing with it for awhile I finally contacted Sony tech support.
Turns out, it DISPLAYS in 1080p, but CANNOT RECEIVE a 1080p signal. What a CROC!
Buyers Beware.
There is a newer model out now (KDS-50A2000). Unfortunately, it has less features (no cable card or memory card slots), and in my opinion doesn't look nearly as nice. But one thing it does, is accept 1080p signal via HDMI.
I should write those f'ers at Sony a strongly worder letter.

Man that totally sucks, I really like the way sxrd pq looks as well but this settles it I am sticking with mitsubishi. Is there a way on sxrd tvs that it will tell you what resolution it is displaying at? I have a 30 hd crt and the only way i can tell it is recieveing a hd signal is that you can't zoom on the picture.

samething almost happened to me! I was about to order a tv (not sony) a few months back when 1080P first come out but just before I ordered it I checked to see if it could take 1080p and it could not. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) only reason I even thought to check was because I know there was nothing on the market at the time that could output 1080P so I checked to see if they where cutting corners and not taking 1080P in every first gen 1080p tv would not take 1080P in. now I am waiting for second gen LED DLP before i will even think about getting a new tv. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

I agree, I love the picture on this TV. I'm gonna see about swapping it out at Best Buy for the newer model. I really wanted a TV that displays AND accepts 1080p signals.
This TV displays the resolution in the upper left when the channel display is shown.

Yeah, I guess there's no where in the spec that states it only DISPLAYS 1080p. You just kind of assume that a 1080p TV accepts a 1080p signal. I won't make that mistake again. I mean, how can you even really call it 1080p if all it does is upconvert a 1080i signal. That's just weak.

How the hell is it 1080p anything, then? It has 1920x1080 pixels, but you cannot use them? Another WTF moment by sony.

it upscales to 1080p.....just can't accept 1080p.

The tv makers don't know jack shit, just look at all those 1366*768 lcds, 95% can't even recieve a 1366*768 computer signal. I'm crossing my fingers for the SEDs and Laser tvs that are bound to conquer the market soon.

It's been supposedly coming for the last 6 yrs. I'll believe it when i see it.

You cannot beat CRT tech, so i'd love it if it did ever come out at a reasonable price.

this was a known issue for a very long time, many reviews have stated this.

This was not just sony every first gen 1080p tv did this.

Also don't waste your money on 1080p unless your getting a 60" TV or you will have to set really close to see the difference. Only saying because KDS-R50XBR1 is 50" I would say that is the bare minimum. I would almost say the people buying the 37" and 42" 1080P LCDs are getting ripped off.

Advice taken. I replaced my 50" KDSR50XBR1 with a 60" KDS60A2000.
1080p input thru HDMI. I have to admit, Gran Turismo looks fantastic.

I honestly like the physical look of the XBR series better, but they are only offering it in 60" and 70" models now, and at several hundred more (or several thousand more for the 70") than the A2000 series.
Only real feature differences are the cable card and memory stick slots (which I wasn't using anyhow).

Now to try and find the fix for the PS3 controller locking up. I've seen posts abot that being an issue before. Was there something that causes it, or is there a fix?

I disagree sir, for the short time that I had my 60GB PS3 hooked up to my 1080p 37" Westinghouse I can say for sure that there was a definite difference in clarity between 1080i and 1080p mode even from a distance of about 8-10 feet.

I plan on buying either the Westinghouse 37" or 42" 1080p lcd because I plan to use it as my pc monitor as well as connecting my 3 gaming systems (360, ps3 and wii). 1080p is much much better than 720p when using it as a pc monitor plus the bonus of running 360 and ps3 in 1080p when supported is nice.

Plus the westinghouse prices are great, I've seen the 37" 1080p lcd for $900 at buy.com and 42" 1080p lcd for $1500, about the same price as most 720p lcd's and it has tons of inputs including 3 hdcp 1080p inputs(1 hdmi and 2 dvi), 2 components and vga. Great value for 1080p.

It actually appears from that chart that at 5' away the full benefit of 1080p is visible on a 37" TV.
And up to 7.5' away, the benefit of 1080p is realized over a resolution of 720p.

But, shit, people can make up statistics for anything. 17% of all people know that!
