Ok here goes,

If you have a tv that does 1080i, 720p, and 480i/p (like you) and you have your PS3 set to accept all those inputs it goes as follows,

Game says 720p on box only, game plays at 720p only
Game says 720p, 1080i, you get 1080i
Blue ray you get 1080i.

That is the best i can explain it

Sounds like I'm ok then...I'm using a sony KV-40xbr800 (40" CRT) that is capable of all those resolutions, just no 1080p.  I have all those rez's checked in the PS3 dash so I should be good to go then right?  I'm using the sony component cable for the time being.  As soon as the upscaling thing is fixed, I'll need to switch to an hdmi to dvi cable right?

the ps3 surely cant render at different sizes for each output.

so you choose your screen size, and thus choose your framerate?

thats freakin awesome!

480p everytime!, better than shocking framerates at 1080p or whatever!

How about 720p everytime? No shocking framerates. And it can be upscaled to 1080i/p without loss of framerate.

That would probably be a fair assumption.

And sony is still supporting all resolutions, its just that some games don't.

*some games*?? Try 'nearly every bloody game doesn't support 1080i'

QUOTE(nezff @ Dec 10 2006, 12:25 AM) *

Ok so if a game is 720p, It will play at 720p on my tv even though I have a 1080i?  and for blue ray, what resolution can i watch that at? 1080i?

No, if your TV can only display 1080i,  then a 720P game will only play at crappy 480P.

If you TV can display 720P then you are OK, if it can't then Sony has decided that as an owner of a 1080i TV that you don't deserve HD gaming, whereas the 360 supports 1080i no matter what the game resolution is.

Ok guys need your help with something:

I have a Plasma that supports 1080i, 720p, and 480i/p and use a HDMI output cord thing.
When all the new games come out and they are in 1080p, will i get downscalled to 720p or 1080i?
And is there a massive difference between 1080i and 1080p in relation to games>

Thanks

1. I'm 99.9% postive your plasma is 720p native which means everything you watch on it will be scaled to 720p

I also doubt there will be very many games at 1080p in the near future but if there are, refer to 1.
differernce in 1080i/p?? not for you because...1.

I believe the PS3 automatically prioritizes 1080p > 1080i > 720p > 480p. You can uncheck any resolution in Display settings that you want it to skip.
