Is It Possible To Use Original Hd To Fix Dash Error On 300gb Hd
« on: January 23, 2009, 10:00:00 PM »

Hi

Ive had a search and did find some info out but just wanted someone to clarify if this will work or not.

Basically i bought a softmodded xbox really cheap a few months ago it has a 300GB Seagate Barracuda HD in it and the guy even gave me the Original stock 10GB HD.

Last week i tried to set it so it boots up XBMC on startup but i accidentally overwrote the wrong file (xboxdash.xbe)
and now it wont boot up and just goes to error screen.

All i need is to delete the false xboxdash.xbe and rename the backup proper one. Ive got a copy of the original Splinter Cell on the way but i was just wondering if the original owner hasnt left the exploits on the HD then im going to need to hotswap it from what i can gather.

Anyway the main question is

Can i put in the original HD (10GB), softmod that and then swap back to the 300GB one  while evox is loaded and delete the false xboxdash and replace it with the backup one on the same drive and then just reboot.

The reason i ask is that the PC isnt mine and my flat mate wouldnt be happy about me opening it up and fiddling about with the ide cable.

Also seeming as there both from the same box could i do the first swap while its  powered off.

Thanks

That wouldn't work - the large disk would still be locked after the swap, so you couldn't write to it.

If you're lucky the gamesaves will still be on the hard drive. It would be sensible, but not essential, to use a recent live enabled game (Halo 2 or later) to update / restore the stock dash before you start.

If the gamesaves aren't there then you could get a USB adapter (like this one) and use a standard USB stick with Xplorer360 beta 6 to put a Krayzie 1.1.1 gamesave on the Xbox, and start from scratch.

The final alternative is that you could hotswap, but as you've overwritten xboxdash.xbe you'll need to find a copy of the one you got rid of, and that's not easy because in a softmod Xbox xboxdash.xbe is not the standard Xboxdash.xbe - it's an old live dash renamed! Rather than messing about, it might be easier to build a new softmod file set using Kingroach NDURE 3.1, and replace the existing C files with the Kingroach ones, and also copy the Kingroach E files to your E. You can use xboxhdm or Xplorer360 to copy the files after the hotswap - either will work.

Among the advantages of upgrading to Krayzie and Kingroach is that they use a shadow C to hide the real C, so you can't accidentally delete xboxdash.xbe! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

UPDATE

I had to wait a week for Splinter Cell to arrived. I loaded it up clicked load game and there it was LINUX so i loaded the exploit and whilst the ftp was open i deleted the troublesome xboxdash.xbe and renamed the proper one back.

I booted the xbox back up and everything works fine.

But at least now i have the usb cable and game incase i need to softmod another xbox in the future.

cheers for your help

Well done.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

A couple of points to remember;

Obviously having the game disc and exploited save on your console is a good thing, but if the console starts spitting up error messages again try not to remove the mains power until it's fixed (as opposed to just turning it off, which is ok). If it goes too long without juice it'll forget the time and for whatever reason this causes it to stop booting game discs.

You might consider backing up the system's EEPROM to your PC. With that, your computer can unlock the drive without going through the dangers of hotswapping. Consider it the ultimate failsafe.
