Softmodded Hd In A New Xbox - Error Code 5
« on: December 30, 2008, 01:05:00 PM »

hi

i have put a softmodded HD into another (virgin) xbox
however, i'm getting the error code 5 service error

now i know this is because the hard drive i've put in the box is locked to the mobo of the box it came out of.

so my question is, what is the simplest way to get this working

at my disposal i have
desktop pc (not too keen on hotswap as i killed a HD earlier)
2 xbox's, one virgin, the other running a hardware chip
FTP access to all machines.
a backup of the original harddrive that was in the new xbox (eprom.bin HD key etc)

i'm looking for a simple solution, that will be quick and easy as i've read far too many articles (i've spent hours) and i'm a bit overwhelmed
any advice greatly appreciated

you are getting error 5 because the drive UNlocked

since you dont want to hotswap the easiest thing to do would be to put the chip in the virgin box and run a softmod installer

QUOTE
FTP access to all machines.

im assuming this doesnt include the virgin xbox, otherwise it wouldnt be virgin, lol

You can lock the hard disk in your chipped Xbox. Boot the chipped Xbox with the softmod disk in it. Put Config Magic on the hard disk, and put eeprom.bin from the softmodded Xbox in the \DATA\ directory under the Config Magic directory. Run Config Magic, select "Load eeprom From .bin", then select Lock HD - it should lock the drive with the eeprom from the softmod Xbox. Then you can drop it into your softmod Xbox.

BUT, before you start, unlock the disk on your chipped Xbox, and make sure you have a backup of the eeprom from the chipped Xbox - just in case!!

Alternatively, you could use xboxhdm with the softmod Xbox eeprom just to lock the disk - you wouldn't need to hotswap, because the disk is already unlocked.

Thanks Heimdall,
I'm having a few issues using the first method

I've loaded config magic onto the softmodded hard drive, and its in the ChippedBox
I've put the eeprom file in the DATA directory as instructed

When i load config magic, i select
"load eepron from .bin file"
which seems to work as the serial number etc change

however, when i select
"Lock HD"

it comes up with a message saying
"load Xbox EEprom to lock!!"

Thanks for all your help, what would you suggest i do next?

Cheers

Hmmmmm .... I'd forgotten about that!

So long as both Xboxes are similar versions (both 1.6, or both 1.1-1.5), you just swap the eeprom contents temporarily. Take a backup copy of the eeprom from your chipped Xbox, check the serial number with LiveInfo to make sure it's a good copy. Load the softmod Xbox eeprom, select "Update Xbox EEPROM" to burn the softmod Xbox eeprom to your Xbox. Now select "Load Xbox EEPROM", then lock the disk. Put the disk in your softmod Xbox and it will boot. Finally, swap the eeprom contents back again using the same process.

If you're uncomfortable with swapping eeprom contents just use xboxhdm. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

thanks heimdall

i think i've gone back a step though, i decided to use xboxhdm, i used option 3 and locked with the eeprom that was saved before ftping all the files to C drive (softmod)

i take it i've used the wrong eeprom as when i booted the box, it loaded msdash, and went back to stock!

did i use the wrong eeprom? if so, at what point do i generate the new eeprom and with what tools

sorry to be a pain!

You've used the right eeprom - if you'd used the wrong eeprom the xbox wouldn't boot and you'd get error 6!! It's booting to the stock dash because you've built a stock C drive, or because you haven't got the modded dash in the right place on E.

Which softmod did you use originally? If it's a recent one and the LED is yellow then the softmod is working, if not then it probably isn't. With a yellow LED you need to cold boot with Slayers or AID and restore the modded dash - where it goes depends on which softmod you used.

If the LED is green you need to start again, but put the softmod files on the xboxhdm disc instead of the stock C files. Start with the stock C files from Slayers or CASH, use Kingroach NDURE 3.1 to build the softmod file set - the manual explains how to do this.

when i created the xboxhdm i used the stock files for the C and E drive, so maybe this is why it messed up

as for the mod, i did the following
1) ran the splintercell exploit
2) copied over Signed_Phoenix_Bios_Loader_V1.3 and Bert cheating on ernie fonts both to the root of C (nothing on E as the tut i following said to do it to C)

i'll try and copy the C drive after step 2 above and burn the iso and lock the HD and see if that works (or am i barking up wrong tree?)

The tut you are following is ancient, and you are barking up the wrong tree!!!!

If you can get a gamesave onto the Xbox then get hold of the Krayzie 1.1.1 Splinter Cell gamesave and run that exploit - it does all the work for you!!

Even if you can't copy the gamesave across, you don't care about the contents of your current C drive. Just build a new softmod file set with Kingroach, and put that on the xboxhdm disc......

Alternatively, run your current exploit then use ftp to delete the current C and copy the Kingroach files onto the Xbox (C and E) instead of your step 2.

Heimdall you are indeed a clever guy, and i'm rather stupid!
Took me about 15 mins to get the box up and running with Krayzie 1.1, stupidly i just searched for a tutorial and followed an old one, i should of asked first!

Thanks so much for your help, i owe you a very large beer!
