Swapping Softmodded Xbox Hdd With Normal Xbox, Possible?
« Reply #15 on: December 12, 2008, 07:54:00 PM »

1) You don't want to "replace your soft-modded XB's HDD with the seller's". The seller's HDD is broken. There is absolutely no point in trying to replace your HDD with his.

2) HDD's a locked to motherboards, yes - But DVD drives are not. There's absolutely nothing stopping you from buying this console off eBay, taking the DVD drive out, and sticking it in your current X-Box to create a fully functional system.

In case you are not yet clear on this, a HDD is a "hard disk drive". The console uses this to store data internally (eg, your save games). Unmodded or softmodded consoles require locked drives, hardmodded consoles do not. A locked HDD will only function in the console it is locked to.

A DVD drive is used to read DVD discs. These are fully interchangeable between all original X-Box versions and are not ever locked.

The two are entirely separate devices inside the console.

3) My last few posts offered suggestions for fixing that error 07. My previous post covers ALL your options - if the drive is truly dead, then you either build the EEPROM reader or you install a modchip. I didn't re-mention the two above points re fixing your original console, as they were covered very early on in this thread.

4) Just as an extra point, if you can get both consoles running, you can connect them via a network cable and transfer all files through that. This means that one functional DVD drive would service two systems.

So the eBay console is chipped, huh? Well done for finally mentioning that. I suppose this explains why you refuse to listen to the idea about switching the DVD drives.  tongue.gif

Anyway, in that case you can just shove any unlocked HDD in there.

It's quite easy to unlock your softmodded X-Box's hard drive if you wish. If the eBay console wasn't chipped, you'd then need to re-lock it for use with that system - hence the EEPROM reader (required to work out the passcode for the lock). But as that console IS chipped, you can just unlock the drive (ConfigMagic can do that for you) and shove it straight in. Boom, done, you then just need to remove the softmod from the drive by booting from a Slayers or Auto Installer Deluxe disc.

Backup your original system's EEPROM first in case you ever need to re-install the HDD in it.

Or are you just assuming that modded = chipped? If the console was softmodded, then it's as good as unmodded now... In which case the original posts I made still stand: EEPROM reader or install a modchip.

(Weird can't edit)

Ok. so All I would need to do is use this "ConfigMagic" and....pop in the HDD...do I need to hook the HDD to my PC?..or...what? lol

First, just to clear something up, I did not choose to reject the idea of switching drives. I HAVE already bought a Samsung Drive...so switching would've been pointless..if you had read my earlier posts that notion would've been avoided.

Second, I choose to go with the "have two working xboxs" idea, was planning to give the chipped one to my friend(a does-have-xbox-friend, not friend-who-sold-his-xbox,lol).

I apologise, the gist I got was that the broken console had the Samsung attached to it.

You will not need to put the HDD in your PC, ConfigMagic can unlock it while it's hooked up to your original console. Remember to back up that EEPROM first! ConfigMagic can also help with that (if you use it's backup function it'll extract it to the root of your E partition, from which you should then FTP it across to your PC).

Once the lock is removed, shove it in the chipped box and boot off one of the aforementioned discs. You'll probably have best results with Auto Installer Deluxe, as it starts up to UnleashX (which has a built in file manager so you can easily remove your softmod from the drive).

If you're not sure how to do that, just wipe the C partition and once that's done use the disc's other menu options to install a new dashboard.

Edit:

Wait wait wait, I'm getting confused again. If you want two working systems then you need two hard drives. Taking your HDD out of your softmodded box will cause problems. The chipped box will accept ANY unlocked +8gb HDD (an AID disc can be used to set the things up from scratch), while replacing the HDD of your softmodded system is a less simplistic task.

If you wish to install a new and larger drive in your own console, do that before installing the original drive in the chipped system.

What you've revealed of your serial shows you have either a 1.0 or a 1.1 system, both of which have a 1mb flashable TSOP. You might find things a bit easier if you flash that - I like the X2 5035 BIOS myself. Once this is done the system will act pretty much the same as a modchipped box (though "disabling" the mod for eg X-Box Live is a little more complex).

Dear hyevltg3,

it stopped working with the hard drive he[seller's friend] had in it, it was 120 gig hard drive, he took it out and put in a 4gig hd then gave it to me[seller]. I[seller] was going to fix it but I just don't have the time. Thats all i know im not sure if it was a chip or software. because the 4gig HDD is not formatted to use with the xbox it doesnt work. maybe if u switch HDs it will work?

>.< .....now I've solved fixing MY box....but for this one...I'm thinking that if it is not chipped, I'm going to post a video on youtube where you'll see me smashing an Xbox to pieces!

So to avoid that...are all modchips solder in the same locations? where should I look when open this box up?

It's also possible the box is TSOP flashed, which as mentioned is much the same as chipped (only you won't see a chip inside).

So the easiest way to tell if the box is flashed OR chipped is to boot it up and compare the flubber sequence to your softmodded box (what you see before the error screen will come up).

If the animations are exactly the same, then the box would've been softmodded.

so it works for my situation

Impossible to answer definitively until you've got the Xbox and know what your situation is - it sounds as though your seller is a little confused!!!!

If the new Xbox is chipped or flashed and the DVD drive works then you'd be better off burning a copy of Slayers or AID onto DVD-R, putting the new drive in the Xbox, and cold booting with Slayers / AID and following the instructions to prepare a new hard drive.

If it's been softmodded then you'll need to build an eeprom reader....

To fix your original Xbox just swap the new DVD drive into your old Xbox.

Going to leave the thread untouched till Thursaday/Friday when I go to pick it up. Because right now all I/you can do is supply assumptions.
So leaving this as-is till I get the xbox in my hands.
