No. Your softmod disc is locked to your motherboard.

What do you mean "switch to an 02"?

Anyway, if your DVD is broken just swap the DVD drives - they aren't locked to the motherboard.

I meant if I swapped HDD with a 02...instead of the 05 (last two digits of the model number)...the last two number specify to what version the xbox is.

No, that tells you which factory made it. The version is dependent on a few other factors. But even if the systems were the exact same version, you still couldn't just swap the HDDs - Every one is locked using a unique code. It's possible to re-lock a drive, though, but that may well be more trouble then it's worth considering you've picked up a new DVD drive.

So my only bet is to swap DVD drives, Just found the samsung, will it suffice for the thompson I have?
Just clearing this up, the seller stated the versions do not matter all DVD drives are interchangeable.

Yes, all X-Box DVD drives are interchangeable. Just stick it in and off you go.

What error does the new Xbox give you?

Either way, just swap the DVD drive into your original Xbox.

As a general rule, that would be 16. Take a look at the listing in my sig.

But a console that gives an error code is usually much easier to repair then one that won't even get that far.

That's definitely an Xbox 360 error screen, which means that you're now the proud owner of a broken Xbox 360.  E79 means that there's either a problem with the hard drive or with the connection to the hard drive.  The Xbox 360 will often work once the hard drive is disconnected.

sleep.gif.....Either I'm dealing with a very dumb seller or he has his facts wrong....he could be mistaking which xbox 1/360 gives an error, lol.

But he did confirm that the above picture looks identical to his error.

When the console turns up, odds are it'll boot to an error 16 (assuming it gives any code at all). For that you'll need to either hotswap or build an EEPROM reader. You might as well read up on those things while you wait for it.

Really, error 16.

alright then, guess better figure out how to build an eeprom.

Any reason why you think an error 16 will appear?
>.< hope it has nothing to do with a busted mobo, those are the hardest to find, and seems difficult to install.

EDIT:...oh dear, eeprom require's hardware....Now I seriously hope....it's the hotswap you mentioned....which is...

Either the seller does not know how to shell out a proper error report....or this is exactly what he's experienced.

"Not 100% sure i thinj its e74, has to do with hard drive"

Is the exact message he gave me when I asked what sort of error it is..... sleep.gif......I've already checked the error data base and the highest it goes is 21.... sleep.gif....
Thanks Bomb Bloke for the info but I've already checked the error codes list when the seller first mentioned that he gets an error, but thanks for trying to help.

EDIT: http://farm3.static....pg?v=1205727168
Whaaaa....googled "xbox errors" so I could explain visually where the error code is located and..I found this...if the seller says e 74.....the picture shows e 79.....what?!?  why are these not in the Xbox Error Codes List?....further inquiry into the pic reveals that its from a 360.....did the xbox's made from Taiwan have different error relaying methods?

it could be an error 14, but the original xbox has no error 74

14 and 16 are both dashboard errors, they can be fixed by rebuilding the HD (access the HD might be tricky, but a hotswap shoudl work in either case)

I thought that the flickr photo you linked to was from the seller.  If not, then I guess it's not possible to tell yet whether or not you'll be getting an Xbox or an Xbox 360. tongue.gif

As far as your hotswap questions go, you can refer to this FAQ.

Either the HDD's cabling is loose (unlikely, but check it first anyway), or the HDD is dead (far more likely).

If the drive is dead, and the console is completely unmodded (or was softmodded), then you will need to either build the EEPROM reader or install a modchip. You can't hotswap a dead drive, only replace it.

From everything that I've read in this thread (it's becoming hard to follow), it seems that you already own a softmodded Xbox with a broken DVD drive, and you're about to buy another Xbox with an error code 07.  If all you want to do is replace your broken DVD drive, then as long as the new DVD drive works, then you can just replace your broken DVD drive with the new one.  There's no need to mess around with EEPROMs, error codes, etc, unless you're actually planning to revive the new Xbox.

>_> ya you definitely did not follow the thread...so here's a refresher.

I have a soft-modded XB, its DVD is broken. I wanted to fix it. (skipping friend's transaction). Found an xbox on eBay that was modded but gets the error 07, so its being sold. Error 07 has to do with HDD failure. I thought I could just replace my soft-modded XB's HDD with the seller's and save money from buying a $60 DVD drive (seller's XB=$20)...but it appears that it is not possible as the HDD is "glued" to the mobo. So now I'm stuck with a New DVD drive AND! an Xbox with the 07 error. So now my question's changed to how to fix the error 07, and if its worth picking up the broken(seller's) XB or not.
