I have a home built teeny board i bought off a mate. He has loaded psgroove 1.1 on it and it works well and ive used Backup Manager 1 to backup my own copies of motostorm 2 & red dead redemption. Now i know i have to keep a disc in the drive to play these as it asks for it. Both games play fine from internal HD (60gb).

Now im thinking of upgrading the internal HD to something bigger internally. Im also wondering is it worth updating the psgroove file on my teensy board as ive heard problems with latest versions. Also is it worth updating Back up manager to version 2? If so how do i delete BUM1 to install BUM2?

Ive heard i need to split some of the bigger files (over 4GB) because of the file system but the games ive loaded so far work fine just by backing up with BUM1 so do i really need to do this?

I would update your teensy to Hermes v1 for now. As for bm right now I'm using open manager I like it and you can use both at the same time. Just FYI I heard that if you delete bm it will delete your games. If you want to install bm2 it should install right over bm1. Also you don't need to worry about splitting files on the internal drive only external.

ok - so if i decide to upgrade the standard 60gb internal hd to a larger internal hd then i should ftp over the games i have backed up to my pc then install and format the new internal drive then ftp them back to the ps3`s new drive?

I would FTP your games to pc. Delete all psgroove stuff. Then use factory backup. Then install new hard drive. FYI I haven't done this. Just logically how I would go about it. I would search for more info about ard drive upgrades with jb. Good luck I don't think you should have too much trouble.
