Question About Hdd Replacements
« on: November 30, 2008, 10:39:00 AM »

Hello!

I have a chipped Xbox, and I want to change HDD. I've seen some different instructions telling me to burn startupdiscs etc, but I don't understand... since I can FTP to the xbox and copy all the files to the HDD I want to use... and well, shouldn't that do the trick?

Depends on which chip you have. Some (e.g. Xecuter X3) have inbuilt consoles to allow you to install discs etc., but most don't, and for those that don't you can only ftp if there is a dashboard running. If you are upgrading the hard drive then the dashboard has to be loaded from a boot disc, so you'll need a boot disc.

The chip I have is a "Duo X2".

The question still remains though; why don't I just insert the disk into my computer, copy all files from the old Xbox HDD to the disc I want to use?

More solid example:
1. I ftp all files from the xbox HDD to my computer
2. I format a new (larger) HDD with the filesystem XBOX uses
3. I copy the files I ftped earlier to the new HDD
4. I switch HDDs in the XBOX

That will work. You'll need to use xboxhdm (or something else that will format Xbox compatible FATX partitions) for step 2, and you'll need to burn the files you ftp from your Xbox onto the xboxhdm CD, or reboot your PC and use Xplorer360 for step 3. By the time you've done that you might find that a boot disc is quicker - and doesn't require you to dismantle your PC!

Hmm,
I'm starting to see why the other approach can be preferred! But I'm still curious (mostly because I tried to replace a HDD using a burned DVD the classic way without success, Probably because the evox bootdisk I tried to make wasn't read by the chipped xbox at all!!)

Actually I have an external USB chassi for the HDD, which means, I wont have to dismantle the PC.

To format the disc with xboxhdm sounds simple enough
Xplorer360 what is that? A Linux setup that allows reading from FATX, or?
On a forum I saw a post saying:

that app is really bad for xbox, i wouldn't reccomend using it for xbox 1

I don't think xboxhdm will work on a USB connected disc.......

Xplorer360 is a Windows app for reading and writing (but NOT formatting) FATX formatted devices .... and it works fine for Xbox 1 discs.

Have you tried chimp?  As long as you don't have a 1.6 (incompatible video card).  This app allows you to clone a hdd using only the xbox.

Nope, haven't tried chimp. Both Xboxes I'm playing with are 1.6 though.

Hmm...

XBoxHDM doesn't seem to be able to format the HDD from within windows. With it, it seems that I have to restart the computer with some Linux-boot-disc.

Do anyone know an app that allows me to create an empty fatX HDD from within windows?

xboxhdm IS a Linux boot disc - that's how it works! I don't think there's a Windows alternative, but xboxhdm is really easy to use..... smile.gif

Check my sig: usb/ide adapter. You trick xboxhdm to work within windows with qemu or vmware. But locking of hdd won't work

As your box is chipped the easiest way is still to burn a boot disc like Slayers or AID...... smile.gif

Your process is fine, but you've copied the shadow C drive, not the real C. The softmod hides the real C so you can't accidentally mess it up!

To get at the real C you need to temporarily bypass the shadow C. For a Krayzie gamesave softmod you run Krayzie Extras. For a Kingroach softmod you select System - Ndure Toolset. If you have another softmod, or don't know which softmod it is, the generic solution is to boot with Frosty's Rescue disc. In all cases the LED turns red so you know that shadow C is disabled.

Once you can see the real C just ftp it across and repeat your process. smile.gif

1. Burn another Frosty's Rescue disc - DVD-R, 4x or slower. Make sure you cold boot it.

2. Find out which softmod you used, and use the tools that come with the softmod to disable the shadow C - as I described in my previous post!

3. Use Kingroach to make a new softmodded C and E from scratch, and use the new C and E with xboxhdm as before.

The C that you have listed is the shadow C, which is held in a file on the real C partition. The softmodded BIOS is patched to read from the shadowc.img file whenever you try to access the C partition, so while the softmod is active you can't see the real C.
