Wondering if when the code is released, if a USB header could be used to emulate it....
No.
The interface between the jig and the PS3 is not the USB Protocol. It is a form of I2C Bus, a serial protocol. Most hardware, such as on your PC, MP3 player, or phone uses standard ASICs that already "talk" USB protocol.
Sony developed a custom ASIC on the PS3 so they could have a proprietary "Jig" protocol, allowing them to access low level functionality on consoles, even if a bad flash bricked them. This is detected and implemented on startup, before the USB port is "initialized" as an actual USB port.
As we currently understand it, the PSJailbreak jig is not an actual copy of the official Sony service jig, but actually exploits the low level protocol to inject code to gain full access to the system. They claim it has no actual copyrighted Sony code in it, too. It seems that the PS3 firmware already contains the code to operate as a "Dev box" and the jig injects code to activate this mode.
So, in short, there will be no "emulation" of the jig by USB Flash drives, or through PC/iPhone/Android/etc USB ports.
On the other hand, the protocol has been completely sniffed out, and is understood. Clones are also out. The parts to make a jig would probably cost you $20~30 to throw together. It would be more bother than it's worth to try and subvert a PC USB port, even if you could.
Clones are already close to market, and will cost less than half of what the PSJailBreak is charging.
What I'd like to see is Team Xecuter create their version of the jig, with a USB passthrough that becomes active AFTER the jig "goes green", allowing users the convenience of not having to plug/unplug USB peripherals as part of the boot up procedure. Even better if the device was basically a block that plugged into aLL of the ports, and provided switched passthroughs for ALL of the ports, allowing you to keep all of your peripherals plugged in at once.
I'm holding off a bit longer for a cheaper clone before I invest in a PS3... I'd also like to find a COMPLETE SDK in the usual places (wink wink, whoever might have it) and maybe I could fire up some MXM-like backup manager action for the PS3 homebrew scene.
