This is some good news on the PS3 hacking front. However, paying $170.00(US) for what's a USB mod that we don't know fully about yet is premature in my opinion. I'm sure there will be alternatives from the scene in the near future.

There's one thing that I still haven't seen fully answered yet unless I just miseed it. I have watched a few videos of the actual testing and proof. I think one video had an actual game in the PS3 drive and I think the other one didn't. Does there have to be a retail game disc in the PS3 drive itself in order to load a game from the HDD? Thanks guys! smile.gif

I have a very strong feeling that this product can and will be cloned. I could see it being worth less then $50 in just a few weeks.

You do need to always have a actual ps3 game in the drive for this hack to work.

A friend of mine got a sample of it today. Here is a picture of the letter he got and of the dongle

Ordered mine today as well - just throwing this out there:
If you order from OZModchips, use discount code gbatWC for a discount on shipping.  I was able to get the FedEx 1-3 day shipping for half.  I think with the code standard shipping would have been free but for just over $8, why not expedite?  smile.gif

I'll report back once I get mine, too.

I know it sounds like a laugh compared to the JTAG hack but some other people have said its legit. Remember garyopa?

Oh'yeah, that would be ME -- Hehe, that's were I been hanging my hat over at http://psx-scene.com for a while. -- My OPA company is the hosting provider and just spent a sleepless night in the server room, throwing in more ram, 12-core cpu's and more network pipes, to handle the now sudden 30,000+ people online at once.

That's what happens when a legit mod finally appears for the PS3.

Basically yes, it is simple clone of the usb-jig used by Sony factorys to turn retail machines into debug units, with an encrypted key, much like a super-complex version of the Pandora PSP battery, but instead of simple Pandora having all >FF's in it's eeprom inside the battery, the usb-dongle has the right info and keys, to be able to install "packages" that do amazing things on your retail PS3!

For more info, just type PS3 or "jailbreak" in Google, there is thousands of sites now covering it.

But remember, "psx-scene" broke the news first, even tho we had a few server overloads, we stay ontop of it, and online, while the world was sleeping.

Stay tuned for official list of local resellers with stock that is now being shipped out!

So it's a tool that verifies against an encrypted key... so all they have to do to break it is release a firmware that changes the key?

Yes but if this would allow for a hacked firmware patch to be applied it could mimic an official release and or disable updates. Similar to the 9199 firmware with the Jtag hack. Does this sound right?

I dont think this is really a "homebrew" breakthrough. As I can tell, it just allows you to play back ups of actual PS3 games ... for any homebrew development someone would have to figure out how to program for the PS3, so a Dev kit or something would have to leak, or someone will have to make their own dev kit (which would take forever) ..... so its cool, but it doesnt make the PS3 a open book...

Also... Sony will have a firmware update to block this for sure, so people will have to keep re-figuring this out or it will just die and you can use it, and never update your PS3
s firmware... or someone will have to make a custom firmware.

This is not the end solution but rather where it all starts. It will be a long road but you cant start down that road until you have access to run unassigned code. It is possible that somebody out there has already had a leaked DEV kit but until now has had no use for it.

Not updating wont be a problem for me. The only time I have ever updated my console is when I had to update to play Oblivion.

Maybe c4eva and the team are working on a custom firmware as we chat! biggrin.gif
