Ok well I bought a 60gb ps3 from my buddy, only in hopes that it will someday be able to boot ps2 backups and upconvert them. With the newer ps3s not playing ps2 games, all all reality what are the chances of anyone caring enough to hack old ps3s to play ps2 backups? I only bought this thing in the high hopes that sooner or later Id get to play my ps2 backups on it....can anyone give a precise answer?

No precise answer to give. Until someone creates a modchip or firmware you are going to be no closer to playing your ps2 backups on your ps3.
 
PS2 backups will most likely be a low priority for any of the hackers out there.
