Dumping images is one thing.  Getting the PS3 to run them is a completely different story...

They probably set some key into a special/not dumpable BD area.
XBox and XBox360 used this way, PSX and PS2 used this way.
Since BD is a completely new kind of disk there's surely something meant to keep some "copyright" data out of sight.

There's no reason to disable the reader or the dd command (and you cannot disable it).
As for the gfx chip I think it's more about "we have no time to spend making an accelerated video driver" (and possible license issues about the driver itself).
If there's some "antipiracy" feature into the GFX it's likely to be something that the driver cannot handle... it's way easier... there's no point in disabling (for example) pipeline programming because there's an antipiracy feature "somewhere in the silicon".

17gb for Resistance?
Seriously why the hell is that game that large?
Thats a large jump for game sizes with stuff all aparent diffirence. Dont tell me hi-def textures, seen that crap before it does not bloat a game out that large :|

this is probably the reason why linux does not have access to the gfx chip (everything in linux is software rendered for the ps3) without access to that chip, booting the game from the hdd within linux would be pointless.

Does that mean no media player like XBMC for the PS3?

Isn't there a blue ray burner available yet?

Someone should burn the ISO, pop it in and see what happens...

wow, I didn't even consider myself experienced until I read the replies to this post.

Sony won't release updates to block commands out of linux. Uhm, its dd guys, not some super l33t software hack.  dd will get the contents of any disc not just their blu-ray games. nothing special, nothing hacked.

I think with this at least people should go through the different file types the game uses. Different encryptions and signatures on different files, the sound files and the video files. Alot of people like to rip those, also to do custom mods on maps and stuff. Like take Halo 2 custom maps, you have to re-encrypt those to play them on xbox1.

Though what I mentioned may seem farfetched and unnecessary now, it will all come together in the future.

Yes, BD writers have been available for a little while now.  That won't work

[sarcasm]Wait, that might just work.............[/sarcasm] dry.gif

Thatd be a great thing to do if you just happen to have a BD burner and an extra $40 to throw away on a Blu-ray disc.

Yeah, we need something like HDloader or something.

If it's that easy to copy the game to the harddrive then I can see some sort of HD loader happening. Doesn't work yet but it could happen in the future.

We need someone with a blu-ray burner to see if its possible to dump blu-ray dvds.  Is there a way we can modify the loader from a demo game to load the full game.  It would be even better if there was a way to burn off the smaller games to a dual layer dvd smile.gif.
