PS3 Discs can be dumped via simple dd command in PS3 Linux

From ps3news.com:
Quote

Tonight CJPC had some freetime and decided to install Linux Fedora Core 5 (PPC iSO) along with PS3 Other OS Installer and the kboot from the CELL-Linux-CL_20061110-ADDON.iso file. Once installed, he logged into the shell and dumped the Extended OS Area (which resulted in 4.0 MB (4,194,304 bytes) by using: dd if=/dev/sdb of=/extendedos.img

Next up, CJPC connected his external USB HDD to his PS3 (since he only has a 20GB stock PS3 HDD) and just (6) days after launch proceeded to dump (read "back-up" to $ony) his Madden NFL 07 PS3 Blu-ray Game Disc (the resulting iSO image is only 7.08 GB (7,597,719,552 bytes)) via the following: dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/mnt/exthdd/imagename.img

If you happen to own a 60GB PS3, you can use this command instead to dump directly to your PS3's HDD: dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/imagename.img

The PS3 Blu-ray Game Discs resemble the PSP file format.
Resistance: Fall Of Man is 17.53GB (18,827,837,440 bytes).

Godbless you PS3Scene. And god bless all the mod developers/experimentators for always being here for us. Without them, the scene wouldn't be possible.

The 3rd step to gaming backup for the PS3 has been accomplished!

So this mean that you can dumb PS3 games onto a external USB hard drive (or the internal one) boot it and play it?

Doesn't say anything about playing img's, only dumping them. Keep your pants on.

Haha I had a feeling soy's decision to let linux run would come back to bite them. But the next question is, how the hack do you get the PS3 launch the game? Maybe theres a way of tricking the console into thinking the full game saved on the HDD supposed to be launched from the HDD. Cause if you can launch those crappy arade games and demos from the HDD, surely that means theres a way to make the console launch an image from a disc?

100% Agree with you jimmy. But even if they put specialized chips on the DVD'S/Blue-Rays themselves, it'll be easily hackable seeing as how that chip's sector can be read and emulated in many many ways. (For those worried about a chip mechanism---useless for structure)

you gotta remember that even though a simple dd command dumps the contents of the dvd rom, it doesn't do much else.

i'm sure sony foresaw this simple command. i'm sure sony knew what they where getting into letting linux boot on their system. this is probably the reason why linux does not have access to the gfx chip (everything in linux is software rendered for the ps3) without access to that chip, booting the game from the hdd within linux would be pointless.

don't get me wrong, i love everything related to exploiting anything, but i'm just trying to be realistic here. a simple img dump is a start for better things.

"without access to that chip, booting the game from the hdd within linux would be pointless." Not necessarily, and that's assuming we will never have access to it or we need it 100% (which is not true) . And realistically speaking, its blue-ray not DVD :-p

I'm sure they will try and block this in the next firmware update anyway. If they can that is.
