PS3 Moving To Increase Movie Playback Support?

Last week, only two vids in the movies folder on my PC turned up in the PS3's browser (both were mpegs). Now [with FW v2.00]? The Xvid and DivX vids are showing up as well. Course they don't actually play, you'll just get a "corrupted" message if you try, but Sony wouldn't have increased the compatibility in there for shits and giggles. Would they?

Note: if even the Sony standalone DVD players can play DivX/Xvid these days, why not the PS3 ...

Probably getting ready to pull the trigger if MS does. I strongly believe that neither company really wants to support xvid and divx, but they will if the other does.

Better video format support would be very nice indeed. I'm still a bit disappointed that although I now have 4 machines hooked up to my TV (PS3, 360, Xbox 1 and DivX DVD player), neither of them satisfies my HTPC requirements. The PS3 is quiet but doesn't play everything and is pretty limited in features, the 360 needs stupid streaming solutions, is too loud, and has the same issues as the PS3, the Xbox 1 is ideal in terms of features but lacks USB 2.0, is too loud, and doesn't play H.264 or HD content, and the DivX DVD player is quiet, but doesn't play H.264 or HD content and has no USB 2.0...

I think there's only 2 options left: i) buy yet another HTPC (a real generic one) and configure and install it myself to make a Myth box out of it. ii) wait a little while and hope the XBMC linux stuff gets along and can eventually be ported to the PS3. Now that RSX accelerations seems to be feasible after all, XBMC on PS3 would be the absolute best solution possible as long as you don't want to do recording.
