Got My New Hd
« on: August 21, 2008, 09:47:00 PM »

Hey Ya'll!  I finally got my new (Not reman) Western Digital 500GB Hard Drive [WD5000AAKB].  Before I even take it out of it's static bag, does anyone have any suggestions for my setup?  I totally want to hear it all so I may have a proper setup done with the HD.  I could have possibly been doing something wrong.  Thanks in advance!!

before you use it i suggest you send that hard drive back and get one with a 5 year warranty.

Well, I was able to get a warranty extension on the original hard drive which will be transferred to the new one I received.  I was not able to get a warranty extension on the new hard drive.  The warranty will cover the new hard drive till sometime in Jan. 2011.  That is good enough for me.

Before I set the new hard drive up, what all do I need to do?  Should I go ahead and plug it in and boot up AID v4.10 (which I believe has some partitioning app)?  How should the hard drive be partitioned?  The way I want it setup is all apps, games, etc. will be stored on F: and savegame info and all that on E:.  I shouldn't need G:.

Ok I use this tut whan I setup a new HDD http://www.xbox-scen...les/hdd-ftp.php

just only partition the c and e then ftp over the files for your c & e drives and also ftp over XBpartitioner_1.1 to your apps folder.

once that is done boot up your xbox and run xbpartitioner to format the drive you just need to pick your setup. IE do you want just f or f&g etc. My 500gb is setup with just f and it is almost full and I havent had any issues with corruption, just make sure you pick the right option for your bios settings.

If you are going with the F drive, I would use Xbpartitioner and make sure it is set for 32k clusters. You may even want to get Xbpartitioner2 and use 64k to make sure you don't run into data corruption.

Awesome, awesome.  That should get be started.  I will post results and whatnot so you all can guide me properly if I go off road.  I should be OK since I will be using AID to help.  I'm pretty sure it has Xbpartitioner.  I had used it on the original 500gb hard drive.

Wow, a news post with an associated thread I've never set eyes on before.

That's kinda embarrassing.  unsure.gif

MrFish and bmcclint have used XBPartitioner to do interesting custom partition sizes in that thread http://forums.xbox-s...o...54566&st=45 and get the hdd/CF card to boot from a chipped bios. For example, bmcclint partitioned this:
CODE

Partitioned out 1GB (320, 512, 64, 64, 64)

That's C,E,X,Y,Z to run XBMC only.

Please correct if I'm wrong with this...What they have done is like this?:

C: --> Partition size: 1GB --> 320k clusters
E: --> Partition size: 1GB --> 512k clusters
X: --> Partition size: 1GB --> 64k clusters
Y: --> Partition size: 1GB --> 64k cluster
Z: --> Partition size: 1GB --> 64k cluster

What about F:?  I would like all my apps, games, movies, etc. on F:, including XBMC.

Ok he wasnt saying for you to set it up that way. He was just stating what someone else did with a 1gb CF card.

C = 320mb
E = 512mb
XYZ all = 64mb

My hard drive formated with 32kb and there havent been any issues.

I was successfully able to burn AID v4.30 onto a DVD-RW and used it to setup my hard drive using XBpartitioner and install XBMC (old version, will update via FTP).  Here is my setup (XBpartitioner table):

Standard Partitions (NOTE: On XBpartitioner v1.1, the spelling of "Standard Partition"="Standard Partiton")
1. start 0055f400 size 009896b0  4882.85MB (16k cluster)
2. start 00465400 size 000fa000  500MB (16k cluster)
3. start 00000400 size 00177000  750MB (16k cluster)
4. start 00177400 size 00177000  750MB (16k cluster)
5. start 002ee400 size 00177000  750MB (16k cluster)
Extended Partitions
6. start 00ee8ab0 size 3949d580  458.31GB (32k cluster)

NOTE: On XBpartitioner v1.1, the spelling of "Standard Partition"="Standard Partiton".  It is missing the second "i".  I just thought I'd point this out, no biggie to me.  =)

It is hanging/snagging when I change settings in XBMC.  I let it sit for a short time before I decided to hit the eject button which rebooted the xbox.  It is also hanging up on bootup, after showing the xbox and xecuter logo. All of this will happen just randomly.  My CPU temp doesn't exceed 112F if not even 110F.  My GPU doesn't exceed 100F.  It usually runs around 99F.  Any ideas?  I don't see it being the hard drive at this point.  I know there's that chance, but surely not.  I'm sure it's gotta be something else.  Thanks in advance!

Check the cables are connected correctly. Might be all it takes to fix it.

Failing that, plug in the console's original HDD. If this gives no error, then the new drive has gone kaput - Buy a different model next time.

Well, I think it is actually the power cable that goes to the hard drive.  I messed with it and so far it has booted up fine.  Any ideas on that?
