You could pull the DVD out of your friend's Xbox and try booting it in yours. The DVD drives are funny. Some will read almost anything and others won't read a thing.

Other than that, try burning it to different media. DVD-R CD-RW are the two best types. You may have to try different brands.

Hi,

So it should be able to boot from DVD even if there are Service Errors? I may give it a shot.

Thank you

it depends on the specific error, with 13 and 14 you will be able to boot a dvd

Error 14 is uncommon.

Does the thing boot retail discs presently? If so, grab a Live compatible game (Halo 2 or later is ideal), tell it to log on, see what happens.

*bangs head against wall*

Of course you wouldn't be able to boot retail game discs. The drive isn't even partitioned. I'm a fool sometimes.

Though that doesn't explain why AID would give a 14. As 1HJ and Vader have mentioned, the system should boot that.

Certainly looks like the HDD is at fault and not the console (given that you get the same result regardless of which system you put the HDD in).

Take the HDD and stick it back in a computer. Does the system still recognise it?

If so, the only thing I can recommend at this point (other then getting a different drive) is to use XBoxHDM on the thing. Create a copy of what your friend has in his C partition, create an XBoxHDM disc with just that on it, and use that to partition the HDD and copy those files over.

Now i've tried my friends harddrive in my xbox, and this time i get Service Error 06.

Maybe the suggestion of XboxHDM may help as a last step?

I thought that i just could put in a new harddrive, and use AID to rebuild the new harddrive, but it wasn't that simple sad.gif. Does it matter if the disc is formatted or not? My replacement drive is the same size and brand as the one i had in the box before it died, but this drive have been sitting in a pc (Windows). Do i need to format it or should it work anyway?

Thank you
Well, i read up in the FAQ and this error is because of the locked HD. I'm not sure that im willing to unlock my friends HD. I'm a newbie to this and don't want to mess his box up.

So i'll guess my only option is the hotswap-thing?

If your friend's box has a modchip, it should be safe enough to unlock the drive. If in doubt, back up his EEPROM data first.

Or just don't bother sticking his drive in your console.

Er, sorry, where did the idea of hotswapping come from?

see the reason i said put your friends hdd in yours is to see if you got a different error code and since you got the error 6 all you should have to do is put a dash on your hdd so what you do is use xboxhdm to build a hdd from scratch but before u make the iso put a dashboard into the c folder i would suggest unleashx first as a test then rename its default.xbe to evoxdash.xbe then you can build the iso and then try building the hdd

or try running slayers boot cd cause i think i have run that with no hdd installed and it worked and try and burn it to a dvd-r  u can also format the drive with slayers so i would try it first

Can i use xboxhdm without hotswap? Ie: Rebuild a new harddrive with xboxhdm directly from a PC? I read a tutorial yesterday that used xboxhdm and hotswapping. Maybe i got it wrong?

The purpose of hotswapping is to circumvent the locking system built into a (usually stock) X-Box drive.

Your new drive has no lock, hence hotswapping is not required.  smile.gif

It's a technique often used with XBoxHDM, but it's not technically a part of XBoxHDM.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the suggestion. I did an backup of my friends xbox's C-drive. I put the contents of the C-drive in the c-folder of XboxHDM and built an ISO. I used option 1 in XboxHDM: "Build a new Xbox HD from scratch" and the harddrive is now ready.

Is this it? Or do i have to lock the HD before putting the drive back to my xbox? (i'm at work so i can't try it in my box now). I have no eeporm file available, so i'll guess i can't generate any HD key?

Sorry for all these questions, but i'll never done this before smile.gif

Thanks in advance

Martin

If your xbox is chipped or tsop flashed, than you can put the harddisk in unlocked.

If it isn't, than an unlocked harddisk will give you an error 5 screen.
(Or no error number if the xbox is a 1.0 with a very old bios)

regards.

Next step is to lock it with the right eeprom.bin which you can obtain via the eeprom reader: http://forums.afterd...view.cfm/357863.

Otherwise the xbox will boot to error 5 as obcd has already mentioned. All softmod xbox hdd needed to be locked correctly with the right hdd password generated from eeprom's hdd key, hdd serial no and hdd model no.
