Study: Few Use Console Video Playback
« on: June 30, 2007, 09:58:00 AM »

hmm... I'll say this, if the PS3/360 played Divx/x264 or had XBMC, I'd use it 95% of the time for Video Playback. But because of the limited formats you can play, to me its pointless using it as a Media Center / Video Playback...

I never used any console for standard DVD playback because they are not as flexible or as good at it as my standalone player.
That is not true for the PS3 which part of my decision to buy was based on Blu-ray playback. A standalone machine for that is too expensive at the moment

Alot of people say the picture looks crisp on 1080p tvs but not on any other type. all agree? any1 know otherwise?

Nothing wrong with the playback of Blu-Ray on mine at any resolution. In fact it is excellent. Trust me I am fussy.I repair this stuff for a living and I know what I am looking at and what is good or bad.

i have read alot about this on the internet and alot of people are in the same boat.

A link to some of these many sources with the same problem?

ll in all, ps3 for media sucks unless you have a £2k 1080p hdtv

You either have a faulty PS3 or a problem with you TV settings or TV. My Tv was only £699 and it is excellent.
what type of connection are you using what TV? I have Casino Royale amongst my BR collection and the quality is outstanding

i am starting to think. all the games manufacturers only make upto 8.5gb games so they can be both xbox360 and ps3 compatible. no one is making games larger than this. this is the reason ps3 release took so long getting the 9gb bluray disc to work properly. for all the games etc.

I don't know where you are getting your info but this is incorrect as well. Do you actually know how much data a Blu-Ray Disc will hold? Look around some places with correct info and you will see manufacturers making discs with a lot higher capacity than your quoted 8GB. Upcoming PES2008 is 18GB at present and it is not complete .

hello again,

right, id had a few beers yesterday before i wrote my comments on the ps3's media. i now feel ive been a bit harsh on it. i have just watched hostel again (sober) and it wasnt really as bad as i have made out, but my thoughts still stand about bluray grain.  i realise however alot of the current films are not filmed in hd. i am expecting everything to be perfect.

with regards to the ps3 for media i was totally wrong. it plays it all (except avi/divx)(please dont reply picking at this, there's proberly loads that it doesnt) all the new hd stuff anyway (which looks fine, no grain lol), it links upto your pc as a media server, gaining access to your pc hard drives etc, streaming music and video inc high def, you can put your duo card / sd and micro sd and all that with adapters to sort your mobile phone audio/pics out, the list goes on.........

it is a great thing to buy, and it is all new, just needs a few firmware updates etc etc (please put avi codec on sony), just a bit of patience. ALL IN ALL, THE PS3 IS GREAT FOR MEDIA, but im not happy with my 2 bluray films. fair comments? (so far) i hope so..........

i have been spoiled with the xbox1 with xbmc for years, but obviously that is the ultimate non hd media centre (once you change the fan in it), need a ps3 for high def. the xbox360 has no upscaling (im still not happy with ps3's upscaling, but sure it will improve in future), the 360 is the loudest thing ive ever heard (lol) and has the most ridiculous power supply ive ever seen (lol) when you put a game in the 360 it sounds like the 360 is about to take off for venus or something.     im less impressed with the 360 than the ps3, but you can play homebrew games in it, thats all its really good for, maybe xbox live is more fun than the ps3 online (only because no1 seems to speak on ps3, but i know its fully capable) give it a few years, when the 360 and the ps3 are hacked to bits, the ps3 will piss all over the 360, as it already does anyway.
