If your life is only 10,000 hours then it would be a big deal.

The point being made is that with the x360 you get two drives which means about twice the drive life. The first thing to go on a heavily used console is the drive, the PS2 is an example of that.

Yeah, XBox360 comes with two drives... at the price of $598 for the premium one + HD-DVD (still no HDMI) or $678 ("Elite" HDMI version). Great!

10,000 hours, eh?  Let's suppose you watched a 2 hour movie per day, and played your PS3 2 hours per day.  10,000 hrs life / 4 hours = 2500 days!

2500 days / 365 days in year = 6.8 years!

How much will blu ray players & a PS3 cost in 7 years?  Heck PS4 may be out by then.

You still think this matters?

By the time your laser burns out, PS3's will be under $200.

When have you known a laser to die on you on a player?  Ususally the loading mechanism goes out well before the laser.

You still have a broken drive genius.  That's the whole point.   rolleyes.gif

Does anyone do research anymore?  Imation recently acquired TDK media.  Imation supports HD DVD.

Akihibara news got it wrong.  Is that hard to understand?  Their translation of the chinese characters "Blu Ray" has been refuted to mean "blue laser".  HD DVD uses a blue laser too.
The whole point is to spread the total usage over two drives.  Movies on the add-on, games on the xbox.

That's why gizmondo and other published retractions and are now calling it a rumor.

You skipped his example about the hours.  The point being that you would have to watch a lot of movie to really do much harm.  I'd bet money that any given 360 will suffer the red ring of death before any given PS3 has its BR drive go out.   You guys really don't want to go down this road.  There may not be much in the way of software for the PS3, but so far it appears to be a far more solid machine than the 360.  The BR drive possibly dying 6 years from now is far down the list of concerns.

Just so you know, that claim of $75 HD-DVD add-ons is totally bogus, as it was most likely due to a pricing error.  HD-DVD add-on still retails for $199.99.

You forget there is still no clear winner of the HD movie format war. If Blu-ray fails, so will the PS3. If HD-DVD loses, then the 360 will most likely get a Blu-ray add on. In the mean time, the Video Marketplace is the safest and cheapest option to go with; also it requires no add on or outrageous price.

edit: If you like to compare prices, don't forget that the PS3 doesn't even have a HD cable with it. The HD cable in retail is $50 AT LEAST (more if HDMI cable). The 360 has all required cables in the box.

I have no idea what CHS. Equiv is. But for major retailers (Best Buy, Circuit City, Radioshack, etc.) even through their online stores HDMI cables aren't cheap, the lowest i could find was $50. I know that HDMI cables are inexpensive on some online stores, but then again xbox 360s aren't always $400 through some online stores; best to compare evenly.
