This is good news for now, but unfortunatly it is not going to last.

Walmart decided to back HD-DVD and not blu-ray. Come 2008 blue ray will be stomped walmart has ordered MILLIONS of HDDVD units and they are going to retail for 200 bucks. It is going to be very hard for blu-ray to kepp up after that.

I'm betting these will be really gimped compared to the real players though. Most likely only 5.1 channels max and no 1080p.

----but if they did have 7.1 through HDMI and 1080p, I'll seriously consider selling my PS3.

Either way, since the general public doesn't give a rat's *** about 1080p or 7.1, this is REALLY going to help the HD-DVD camp.

Those $299 HD-DVD are expected for xmas...
I think it wouldn't be that much of a deal, right now you can go to Amazon and take a Toshiba HD-DVD reader for $300-something plus every vendor will deliver cheap readers before xmas.
The truth is that you can take an HD-DVD reader today ( http://www.amazon.co...D...853&sr=8-25 ) for $290, still HD-DVD is losing ground.
By the next winter Wallmart will deliver HD-DVD at $299, but Sony and others will push BD-DVD readers on the same way too, so there's not much of a deal here.

Someone miss the point that for $599 (that's not much) you can get a good BD-DVD player that also play games.

I'm hearing $200 this christmas for these players. And remember everytime you play a movie on your PS3, you lose 2 hrs of life from that drive.

Still,going by numbers sold for each format,neither one is doing badly.That could all change if Walmart starts selling a low cost HD-DVD player,it definitely didn't hurt the DVD format when they started selling $30 DVD players.

thats about all I use my PS3 for and since I got my 360 HD-DVD player I don't even use it for that...

ok i'm a bit confused. when they say Blu-ray DISCS... do they mean Movies AND PS3 Games - since they are all on a BLU RAY DISC?

If we're going to compare total number of discs sold, let's split the totals and find out how many movies are being sold compared to the PS3 games.

As far as I'm concerned, I'll keep my HD-DVD add on for my 360. I'm pissed that SONY decided to start another BETA vs. VHS war.

Not to mention the fact that all the early Blu Ray players will be obsolete this fall.

It doesn't matter if the Hd-dvd player walmart carries is the biggest POS of all time. Hundreds of thousands of people are going to buy them up. Walmart is one of the biggest companies in the world, maybe the biggest and if they carry it people will buy it.

When this hits i wouldn't be surprised if HD-DVD doubles blu-ray sales in a month. It is not about the better product or the better player this is making units available at a cheap price to millions upon millions of people and no matter how you slice it it's a huge blow to blu-ray.

The point being made is that with the x360 you get two drives which means about twice the drive life. The first thing to go on a heavily used console is the drive, the PS2 is an example of that.

This is definitely big news for HD-DVD, but it's far from a back breaker for BR. Does Wal-Mart have some deal with the HD-DVD camp that prevents them from carrying BR too? If not, expect a similar move by the BR camp. Also, HD-DVD doesn't have the backing of Disney yet. That's a big deal to the general public. When they realize they can't get moves like Pirates of the Caribbean (releasing next month on BR) on HD-DVD many will be BR shopping.

Does anyone do research anymore? Imation recently acquired TDK media. Imation supports HD DVD.

Akihibara news got it wrong. Is that hard to understand? Their translation of the chinese characters "Blu Ray" has been refuted to mean "blue laser". HD DVD uses a blue laser too.

The whole point is to spread the total usage over two drives. Movies on the add-on, games on the xbox.

When i saw the original announcment on the news the banner said walmart chose to go with hd-dvd and not blu-ray. The story painted it out to be a wall of cheap hddvd players and movies and a few regular priced blue ray players and movies. Average joe isn't going to know better and he is going go for the new tech that is 250 and not 600 or whatever. This couldjust be to make the story have more punch but that is how the news made it out to be.

Not trying to be a dick but large masses of people just don't care about quality and features. A ton of people will buy this and when the salesman is asked what about disney movies the response will probably be "this HD-DVD player will upconvert your all standard dvd movies to near hd quality" and i don't think the masses of people who are buying it just to be trendy or in the know in the first place will care.

Is this a total deal breaker, who knows. I own both formats and could care less who wins, but this is a pretty large blow to sony. I for one am waiting for a good dual format player to squash all this nonsense.
