Controllers Won't Work Now. Help?!
« on: June 30, 2008, 08:27:00 PM »

I didn't check the mobo yet.  All other controllers don't work either and not on any ports.

Could it be software related?

A driver on the xbox that is missing now or something???

I had 3 controllers die on me and all with the same problem. It seems that the problem is always where the controller and wire meets at the top. Probably caused by rolling the wire around the controller and after wear/tear something goes wrong.

My advice, get one of those wireless logitech controllers. It's worth the money, very durable, and wireless!

cords are very well taken care of and never had problems before.  Removed daughter board about 20 times.  Could be the mobo points.  The posssiblility of all 3 just suddenly not working do to a cord malfunction seems very unlikely. tongue.gif

Thanks for the opinion though.  I'll take a controller apart to verify. dry.gif

I jsut checked and there is all continuity from mobo to daughter.  And each port has good ground and 5 volts.

Seems like software....

Hi,

if you think it's the software, just cold boot an original xbox game disk. The softmod only becomes operational when the M$dash is loaded. With an original disk in the drive, it won't activate. If your controllers still don't work, it's a hardware issue.

regards.

is that true?  I did try to boot  a game to make sure it wasn't the hardware and your right, but I booted halo 1 which was a back up.  The chip is out and just the softmod and I put the game in turned off the box then turned it back on.  how would a back up work if the softmod didn't load first?  This means it could still be software.

Even if it is hardware or software any links to examples of fixes would be great.  The search feature keeps looking and returning but the page is collapsed and I g\can view any results.  Also Bomb Bloke closed all of my other post in an attempt (I think) to clean up and keep things on one post... but the link won't work to where he sent things.

It has to be an original game disc for the softmod to be disabled.

useless if you can't interface with it....

1. obcd's suggestion of using an original game disc already proved it is not softmod related as the softmod doesn't load. All softmods still use the retail kernel and this means all load original ms signed DVD's default.xbe by default without choice.
2. If you are still convinced otherwise, you could return the xbox to stock. In the pinned topics here, there's a tutorial to remove the softmod. If the controller ports still don't work, it's hardware. But because of point 1, I'm quite certain it's not a softmod problem. Murphy's law sometimes yields itself ...
3. Since unleashX is loaded, see if you have ftp access. At least you can verify the dash is working and network is working - in other words nothing wrong with the softmod.

I wish I can help you but all that electronics stuff is over my head - I can only help if it's softmod related.

Go ahead with your plan of replacing the daughterboard. Make sure you're replacing it with a known working one.

If the new daughterboard works, you can use it as a reference point for analyzing your other one.
Take the values shown on the working daughterboard and compare them to those on the other one & see if you can trace the problem there.

Also, as these xboxes continue to get older, we're noticing more problems cropping up. Particularly with corrosion of the traces. If the daughterboard isn't the problem, that'll be the next item to check for.

Ok, Let me try to help ya out. I have a "better than average"  wink.gif  electronics troubleshooting background.

Perform these steps with xbox turned on but use caution.

If I was in your spot.... I would

1. Take a multimeter and check voltage to controllers at root, on main board with daughter removed. 5v?

2.Attach daughterboard, Check voltage agin at daughter board out, 5V?

3.Attach controller ports, test voltage. 5v?

4.Pick a controller. Disassemble controller. Plug it in to your xbox, test voltage at controller main board in. 5v?

5.Repeat step 4 with a different controller.

If you get correct voltage after following the above steps, your problem is likely an IC or PIC.
Purchase, or otherwise obtain, a new motherboard but DO NOT DISCARD THE OLD MOTHERBOARD until the eeprom contained, therein, has been recovered.

Hope this helps.
