okay so im a total noob when it comes to knowing anything about the ps3. my question is can i use more than 1 hard drive on one ps3? by that i mean can i use my factory installed 120gb one day and then the next day use an old 80gb that i had laying around and still maintain the data from my original 120gb? i guess more simply put- will i lose my original data if i introduce a new hard drive to the console?

you can just use the extra drive as external HDD

i guess i just am not understanding what your trying to accomplish..
