Would I be able to just create an original un-modded HDD using this method? I'd rather have an un-modified large HDD, then soft-mod it and put everything on it. Is this possible?

Yes, of course. It just comes down to what files you put on the new hdd. If it's retail msdash files, it will boot to retail state. If it's softmod files, it will boot to modded state.

The boot disc by itself can also be used like a CASH 1.1 like boot disc - used for softmod upgrades.

How does this work on a "softmodded" xbox...?

How is the softmod able to boot a disc with no chip installed..?

Am I missing something here..?

this is not true cold booting, xman954 gave an explanation once:
1 retail kernel
2 not a valid xbox disc
3 exploited msdash
4 font exploit
5 nkpatcher
6 dvd default.xbe

1. Re-read the rest of the thread - media problems. Does the dvd-r media you used worked for you in the past?
2. Try if Frosty's xbox rescue disc boots.

Im doing this right now, and i'm at the filemanager step.

It seems that the only thing in my c drive is xboxdash.xbe
all these other files talked about in the first posts are in the D drive and actually,

D/C/ndure and D/C/... etc. Should I copy over the contents of D/C/ to just C/ and then continue this?

Yes you should copy over the files from DVD to C and E drives of hdd.
But which version of the xml file did you use? first post or the corrected one later?

I used the one from the first post. So now I have the right one from the 2nd page.

Anyway im going to make a new dvd to fix that, and I noticed that in my dash download (ms-dash-mik3h) There are 2 copies of xbox.xtf and xbox book.xtf. One set of these files is in C/ and the other set of these 2 files is in C/Fonts/  and since together their like 30mb, it is just over the amount of space on C after I format.

So which ones of these are the correct ones and which should I delete?

Oh and I tried going throguh with this stuff yesterday and ended up finishing, but it doesnt work so Ill do it again. But i locked my hard drive with config magic. Is this going to cause me any trouble or do I need to do something to unlock it first?

1. I've checked against Bomb Bloke's list of msdash file listing: http://pastebin.com/f50eae434
The twin copies of xbox.xtf/xbox book.xtf look correct.

2. Did you prepare the 2 zip files as specified in the second config.xml post? The instructions differ from the first post if you didn't realize.

3. If new hdd is already locked, you need to hotswap this hdd with DVD IDE cable disconnect/Error 12 method. It won't boot to error 5 anymore as in the original instructions. After that, maintain power through the external source to keep it unlocked until the boot disc boots via the old hdd then connect the IDE cable over.

Just to add, because you said you already formatted the new hdd and locked it. Another possibility arises: you can now hotswap it to xplorer360 running on Windows. That will allow you to correct dash related problems, as you already have a good copy of msdash ver 5960 used to create the lxhdm xiso. Kingroach Ndure will also create the softmod files on PC for you to softmod the new hdd. Just ensure ernie.xtf is copied before xbox.xtf in xodash folder to the hdd. Partition 3 is C drive, partition 4 is E drive in xplorer360.

In other words, you don't have to use lxhdm anymore. Its main job is to format the 5 stock partitions and lock the new hdd. Dash files/softmod files can be installed through other means.

ok i guess this is a dumb question but how do i use xplorer 360?

the only thing ive tried is plugging in the xbox drive to an external usb shell and windows wont detect it. this thing didnt come with directions

You'll need to hotswap so read the art of hotswapping. No other special instructions needed except that partition 3 is C drive, partition 4 is E drive.  Partitions 0-2 don't matter for what you want to do. You are just exchanging the software tool inside the tutorial from xboxhdm to xplorer360 which runs in Windows. Power to the xbox hdd should be supplied throughout the process to keep it temporarily unlocked.

Update to the post above.

Simply removing the files to the Ndure folder that was made to copy shit over fixed the problem.

Also since they were just audio files for Xbox live, a service I never planned on using, I did not even bother coping them over.

This process was simple, mostly painless and the only thing that worked for me. A gold star for you.

Thanks.. beerchug.gif a nice present for the almost one year old lxhdm.

On a side note, I'm toying with ideas for the next version, renamed Xbox Mayday Response Disc

i get here, but i am unable to find that menu option, is it under a submenu?

I have the following menus

You copied the wrong config.xml (which you took from ndts) over to the dvd. I hope you didn't miss anything else out in the instructions.

Is yours a blank new hdd or you are low on DVD-Rs? Relaunching d:\root.xbe through the file manager in your current menu should still work and for the locking you need to navigate to the correct ConfigMagic folder to launch default.xbe

Otherwise remaster the iso with the correct config.xml (from post#1)

I burned the new dvd, and got the menu i was supposed to have, i get to the part where it is in a blue square, and it either freezes at formatting drive c or copying files from DVDdrive/content or something like that... any more suggestions?

Thanks a lot by the way

Rename CDrive at step 5 to something else , say msdash and manually copy it at execution step 10.
