there is a windows port of hdparm here:

http://hdparm-win32.dyndns.org/hdparm/

if the master password really works then maybe we can unlock the drive from windows and then run xplorer 360 without resetting. However the version listed here is old and does not support latest hdparm 8 versions ATA security unlock.

Same thread, earlier post, I gave the link  smile.gif  http://forums.xbox-s...&...t&p=4297603.

This windows version has security commands.

damn it.. sleep.gif   I tried that on a unmodded retail xbox. the tool only has "--securit -help" command. If you try any others it will give you ( This feature was not availavle when the program was compiled or something like that)..

That does mean that maximum security drives can't be accessed using this method, yes. But we do know some stock drives aren't locked that way.

correct, ive tried a few more WDs and they all worked for me, i didnt check if security was maximum or not, but the master password worked 100% for me

So the method will work for stock WD drives and not the Seagates since those seem to be locked to maximum mode.

MHDD supports dumping of drive sectors to file and writing to drive from file so that should work as a means of inserting the softmod files: a 500Mb bit-level image of a softmodded C drive to be inserted at the particular LBA start sector.

Just a link that seems relevant. I can't be bothered reading through it right now but I don't want to lose it.

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?&am...41&t=466408

Supposedly you build something or other that unlocks drives...

Update:

hdparm works on Windows OS for unlocking of hdd both temporarily and permanently: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?s=&...t&p=4378038

Hence this is a viable means of modding a xbox with WD hdd with Windows based tools.

I have a WD2000jb hard drive the master password is "TEAMASSEMBLY" using ATAPWD to unlock it, but after reboot it lock back up. I've tryed everthing suggested here, but get the same results. Am I missing something?  I wish my X-box was still working. I used the old Slayer program to do the mods. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

The drive lock automatically re-enables itself when it next powers up. You need to first unlock it, then disable locking completely.

It gets better, there is actually a windows based tool: http://hdparm-win32.dyndns.org/hdparm/ that might be able to unlock the hdd with this command:
CODE

hdparm --security-unlock WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD /dev/hdb

Worked a charm, you champion.. Only problem is now my drive is unlocked and if i reset and boot into xboxhdm it will lock my drive again.

Do you have eeprom backup? AFAIK there is a security-disable option
CODE
hdparm --security-disable WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD /dev/hdb

but I'm not sure what exactly you have in mind. You do know of xplorer360 as windows alternative to xboxhdm right?

hdtool.exe extends hdparm for win32 to allow use of hexadecimal passwords and eeprom.bin against the hdd.

Hi Idotsfan, and everybody out there!        I took your advice to unblock a WD disk with factory master password using hdparm under Windoz XP.  It worked like a charm and I could access the drive.  Thanks!

BUT after that, tired of unblocking it after power-ups, decided to execute the --security-disable command.  It worked, I could access disk again.  I kept the PC running for some hours with processes on other disk, and when I came back the WD drive had disappeared from Windoz Tree, so I reseted the machine.  (That "disappear" issue was a little bit common for that WD drive)

The disk appeared locked again.  And since then, none of the security commands worked again with the same master password!   mad.gif  HDPARM.exe returns:
"Problem issuing security command: Input/output error", and below:
"Error: 5"

I just can´t figure out what´s going on here  unsure.gif      After this I tried to unlock it with ATAPWD under DOS and it returns "command rejected by drive".  This tools shows that security is enabled, disk is locked, security level is high, and USER password is set (that´s weird!).  I guess under such conditions master password should unblock it anyway, but it don´t.

¿What else can I try?  I need to read some other info from that hdd so I just won´t try "--security-erase".
I wonder if the "Input/output error" is the same error that hdparm returns when you enter a wrong password...

Neither can I figure it out too  dry.gif

You can try MHDD or HDAT2 to verify the hdd security status.

Incidentally why did you need to use hdparm? What were you attempting to do with the hdd?
