Analysis: PS3 selling more games than Xbox 360 with smaller install base

The PS3 is rapidly becoming the bread-winner for many of the third party publishers. We wrote a story a few months ago where according to EA's financial report the PS3 was the clear bread-winner over the Xbox 360 and the Wii. Now it seems that Konami, Namco Bandi and Ubisoft have joined the ranks of EA where the PS3 console is bringing in more money than the Xbox 360.

It's mind blowing that not only is the PS3 competing toe-to-toe with the Xbox 360, it is out performing the later in many of the instances. Considering that the Xbox 360 has a larger install base by 5 million, it looks like the PS3 is performing more efficiently  in terms of sales for third party publishers.

Since 2005, when the Xbox 360 first launched with no competition, it seems that the PS3 has been steadily climbing in terms of the software sales. This pretty much means that the PS3 has been taking more and more potential Xbox 360 sales as time goes by. The future for the PS3 looks bright and healthy, however  if the current trend continues the Xbox 360 might find itself struggling to compete in the market.

ph34r.gif Sits and waits for all the usual crew, with comments like attach rate and "there are no games for the PS3" etc  rolleyes.gif

I don't really think at this point this means anything as the 360 has a bigger install base then it has a larger volume of games sold, by and large. The PS3 would need to keep up a better ratio with a bigger install base to mean more money for software developers on the PS3. that is not at present and will not be the case for some time ..if indeed it happens.

Madden 09

Soul Calibur 4

Assassins Creed

Devil May Cry 4

Of the top selling games of each respected 3rd party company, only DMC4 on the PS3 outsold the 360 version.  Now i realize this is only one game from each 3rd party dev that was mentioned, but their top game should account for a lot of their revenue.

I would really like to see where they got their data from.  As as, i call BS.

This is phenomenally bad analysis that even Sony's PR department would be embarrassed to publish.  The 360 has a larger install base, and a larger attach rate.  That's the end of the story.

This "analysis" cherry picks a few publishers that happen to sell more PS3 games to show that the 360 isn't selling as many games.

I don't really buy that article, because it does give any numbers to back it up.  Microsoft flaunts their attachment rate which i think is around 8 games per console.  I figure for that they take the # of games sold and divide it by the amount of consoles sold.  So it would seem to me that the 360 still sells more games.

Then they mention if trends continue the 360 might have problems?  lol.. the ps3 barely beat out the 360 for a few months, I think its to early to call (as they cut 360 prices and that brought sales back up).

I own both.. but I just wanted to point out sloppily done that article was.

one quick look through the weekly charts show that isn't true. we could go back months but, i'm sure we'd see the same thing. the article is just made up hype to get publicity.

I don't believe that at all. I own both systems and I only have 4 games for my PS3, 37 for the 360. I understand I'm most likely in the minority as far as 360 games owned but the gamerscore did it to me.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
Did they count blue-ray movies in that article? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

It's a crying shame that "news" articles are created on the back of fiction and then spread like wild fire across the web.

A similar story cropped up going back a few months about EA making bucket loads more on PS3 according to some data directly from EA.  The story quickly spread to sheer amazement.

It took an analyst a few days later to point out that the launch windows of 360/ps/wii were different resulting in completely skewed figures that across quarters that couldn't be compared in any way..aka, apples vs oranges.  THis story however didnt make headlines as the sansationalisim was not in the same league.
