PS3 led Xbox 360 as the two consoles vied for the top slot in the high-def console race in July, a month that saw sales climb 28 percent year-on-year to $1.1 billion, NPD Group reported Thursday.

In the U.S., Sony's console sold 224,900 units versus Xbox 360's 204,800 during the month.

PS3 also topped Xbox 360 in June, nearly doubling sales of Microsoft's console that month thanks to the release of PS3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4.

In typical fashion, Nintendo Wii handily outsold the two higher-priced consoles with 555,000 units sold in July.

Lemme beat someone to the punch:
Yes, but in Japan last week they sold more 360's due to Tales of Vesperia... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Ok, so yay, competition is healthy, so it should mean a lot of "1-up" battles are coming (Home vs Avatars, Trophies vs Achievements, etc). While we'll start seeing a lot of "the same" surface on both systems, we should also see them branch out in different directions once all the basics are covered. Sounds like fun.

Even the PSP (221,00 UNITS) outsold Xbox360 last month!

With the 20GB clearance sale price cut I would've expected more from Microsoft -- perhaps the rumors of Sept price-cuts across the board stunted sales.  MS really, really should have dropped prices months ago, when sales flattened and Sony outsold them three months in a row.  However, I'm still gobsmacked by how much software Xbox360 manages to move, there is some solace for Microsoft there.

Once again, Sony is squeeking past MS in selling slightly more hardware units but software is still lagging.  Again, at this rate it will take decades to catch up to the Xbox360 install base.  The MGS4 bump has already fizzled out.

I'm not sure where this puts the PS3: stats show people are buying the console but apparently not games and not Blu-Ray movies. What are they doing with these PS3 units without games or movies.  ???

I can't see the game itself bricking your drive. There's apparently been some problems with a few people with the updates; are you sure it wasn't an update that caused the problem?

If you updated your console shortly before this problem started occuring, I'd say it's safe enough to blame the update, and call Sony. They should take care of you quite quickly if it's fw related.
