Naughty Dog: PS3 Running at Only 30-40pct

From edge-online.com:

The PlayStation 3 has churned out some great-looking games, but Naughty Dog co-lead designer Richard Lemarchand says Sony's Edge toolset will unlock the true potential of the Cell processor.

"There's a set of tools called Edge that were developed on the Naughty Dog premises, actually, by a group of very, very senior games programmer, some from Naughty Dog and some from elsewhere," Lemarchand told ThreeSpeech.

"...That's why we think we're probably only using 30 or 40 percent of the power of the PS3 right now, and there's this great, untapped potential."

Lemarchand called the tools "low-level libraries" and said they are available for free to third-party developers.

i hope so.. they said the same thing about the saturn, but no one ever really tapped its full power, right to the end of its life.. ps3 took a year longer than the 360 and the graphics are no better so far... kinda silly really

I can kinda argue with ya on that one...Sega tapped it's power with Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Game Arts tapped it with Grandia (most people never saw this on a Saturn, since it was Japan-exclusive). Shining Force III is a pretty decent example too, though only the first scenario was released stateswide. Of course, even with those titles in mind, that's an underwhelming minority of available software that actually tapped the potential (too bad that Sonic game never made it). If Sony hadn't made 'poly-power' such a marketable thing, the Saturn could've done great numbers off it's superior versions of almost every hand-animated/2d game.

Back to the OT, it's very nice to hear the people behind one of the best PS3 games (Uncharted: Drake's Fortune) say that the potential is still untapped. I was going to buy the next Uncharted, regardless (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

These % are meaningless.  How many more will we have to hear about?

This ship has sailed...

the time for developers to stretch their legs to harness the potential has already come and gone...

you cant sell potential 3 years into a 5 year life cycle.

So what if the games next year are the most amazing things anyone has ever seen? the year after that we'll be hearing about the PS4 and the next xbox and no one will care anymore...

All these articles do is make me glad I didn't spend top dollar on a PS3 under the premise that something great was going to show up...

I've had $$ sitting in the bank earmarked for a PS3 since it's launch Sony will get it when they give me a reason to spend it beyond one or two above average exclusives.

Had this article been written a month or two after launch... ok, at this point in the game I'm just deaf to the "good things are coming" BS... show me something or shut up.

I couldn't agree more,

I found it completely absurd that during this years sony E3 press conference they allocated like 10 min of it showing a bunch of dev's talk about how much power and potential it has. Who the hell cares at this point Why not show some games that demonstrate that.

What on earth makes you think I like my PS3  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I don't know about the developers statements but in Europe the PS3 has not even reached 2 years old until next year. No way this is going to be on it's way so soon. Didn't Sony state a 10 year life cycle for this?

there are no external devs with any information on the next generation of console... that i know of there are no internal devs either... a next gen is in progress of course.... but R&D is often blind to the implementation and thus while its likely going on its both unrecognised and unlinked to the final hardware it will be used in.

so... based on the last 3 generations we are at LEAST 4 years out.... and likely more... from a "new" generation of consoles.
