Issues With Hot-swapping Xbox - Error 05 - Please Help.
« on: May 25, 2008, 08:46:00 AM »

Please request a mod to move this - it has nothing remotely to do with tsop flashing.

Are you trying to repair a bad solder job or you are trying to restore the stock hdd? Anyway without a working chip, you need a lockable hdd to boot ms dash.

You will get better responses once this thread is moved.

and on top of needed a lockable HD to run without a chip, you need your eeprom as well, if you dont have that youll need a chip anyway to lock it

BTW the hotswap was unnecessary, its a means of accessing a locked HD, but yours was already unlocked

... we bought a de-soldering solder sucker tool and fine tip solder - the previous job has been done so badly we can't remove the solder - scratching, solder sucking, compressed air, NOTHING will get rid of it

Try soldering "braid", or "wick". Essentially it looks like a bit of string woven out of very thin copper wire. You stick it on your solder splodge... Hold the soldering iron point on top of it... And it all just gets absorbed. It's like using tissue paper on a spill.

I tried a solder sucker once, couldn't really get the hang of it. I get the impression they're only of use for removing easily accesible blobs, and even then only if you're happy to leave half of the mess behind... Kind of like using a vacuum cleaner in a mud pit...

As Vader mentioned, hotswapping is simply a method of accessing a locked HDD. Your's is NOT locked, so there's no point in trying - If you just shove the HDD in your PC, you'll find that XBoxHDM reads it whether it's connected to the X-Box or not. Very likely the files on the drive were fine to begin with.

You have two options.

1) Fix the modchip. With this up and running again, your console will no longer complain about the fact that your drive is unlocked (by giving an error 05) and you should be set to go.

2) Get a copy of the system's EEPROM data and lock the drive. There's a link to an EEPROM reader design in my signature.

Pink-Blue-Gill earlier said his xbox hdd is not lockable so he has to fix his chip. Is the bad soldering confined to only D0 - the top via or other places as well? There's an alternative D0 point at the back as well.

If you tell us what version of xbox you have we can.
I will tell you I have used the duox2 on numerous xboxes and I have never been able to get the 1.4's to boot off the bottom DO only the top I may have been doing something wrong but I dont think so.If you have a 1.4 this could be a problem with your system as well if its a 1.2 or 1.3 it may be likely as well they share the same alternate DO point

There are no issues using the bottom D0 with a DuoX 2. It must be something you did because the points are actually linked.

It does not make any since to me either.I can test and get continuity from the bottom but it wont boot it just frags Ive had this do this to me atleast 5 times on 5 different xboxes at that before I found that there were not any issues for the top.I have had this happen to me so many times that I cant say it is a fluke. Its always the 1.4 that does it Ive never had problems from the other models I always use the bottom for the others.I dont keep chips on boxes unless I have to I really just use them for repairs. It could not be the wrong point on the bottom either because its the same hole on the top.I figured maybe length of wire and some little difference in that version mobo.Who knows? It could be me it would not be the first time I was ever wrong or the last either.
I'll take your word for it most of what I know about chips Ive read from your posts.

The point in that picture above is the bottom DO point and it is located off to the side from the lpc board.
Here is a link of a page that if you scroll threw you will find the top DO point these two points are connected and are located in the same place on oppisite sides of the board if you attach a wire to either side it SHOULD work but I have personally had problems with using the bottom as I have said already in this thread.
