Maybe he should find out by calling MS's customer service to see if they'll exchange a 360 for his PS3.

Worst case is he gets told no.

Yea, I remember I had to buy a PS3 and return it just so I could get a receipt showing I bought the PS3.

Sony is only protecting themselves by asking for a receipt. Every MFG Warranty I have ever dealt with requires a receipt. It's just common sense. People need to be more responsible and hold on to their receipts or aleast be smart like me and get a receipt.

That's BS...

I returned my 360 for warranty coverage with no receipt...

Similarly I bought a USED Gamecube a few years back that needed repair and Nintendo happily replaced it with no receipt either...

I've sent in dozens of items for warranty work and I can't recall a single instance where I was required to provide a receipt to have the work done.

When Adrian threatened to switch to XBOX

I always think people are wasting there time with this argument, sometimes you see it on these forums, Adrian kinda proved that in the end he just wasted his time lol. The best solution would be to give it back to your friend  and ask them to send it back in.

I returned my 360 with no receipt also. and long time a go someone gave me a broken N64 I called nintendo and the N64 was out of warranty but they gave me an extra 1 week warranty, i did a next day mail and got the N64 fixed for free and nintendo paid for the shipping too. and nintendo didnt ask for any receipt.
the only time I had a bad customer support has been with sony when my PSX broke.

I had an Alpine radio that died pre-maturely. No receipt, but it was manfactured earlier that year, so they had no problem swapping it out. I don't see why the receipt is necessary, as 99% of people didn't buy their PS3 from Sony. Hell, I bought mine used; wonder if I should go ahead and void my warranty if it's no good, anyway.

And Sony's support speaks English, but they're just as incompetent as MS support. I had a girl basically treat me like I was stupid because my Harry Potter BD wouldn't work on my 60GB PS3 (just year one; the rest of the discs worked just fine). She walked me through the options, which I had already tried, and then advised me to reset to factory defaults, which didn't work. Then she said the BD was broke and there's no way it was the PS3, however the disc plays just fine in both my friend's 40GB PS3, and the display BD players at Best Buy.

Hey, I bought a used broken 360 on ebay.

I called Microsoft and they sent me the coffin and I got it replaced.

I had no receipt

The console was not even registered to me.

Yet it was replaced.

Some of those reps are a bit out of control.

I had the common freezing controller problem, where the BT would lose connectivity for a couple seconds.  I thought a firmware update would resolve, but after over a year it didn't.  Called Sony, they knew it was over a year old.  Rep told me to take it back to Walmart for an exchange.  They'll take in anything.

Worked for me!

------

Although in the case of this thread, I can rationalize Sony's response.  Electronics are typically not supported by unauthorized resellers.  The item could be stolen or refurbished.

my controller does that shit all the time. one of the many reasons why i don't play my ps3 often. can't tell you how many times i died in resistance cause of that. also, i decided to try the haze demo last night, which is a great game btw, and it lost connection too. i was >:|

I have never experienced this problem, but have you tried unplugging the 360 while playing your PS3?

I'm curious if it's similar to the claim that the 360's wireless signal (for controllers and peripherals) would cause interference with other devices.

My cell phone causes interference with my tv.  It causes it to make noise and disrupts the picture (I only use the tv to play video games) it even makes noise when the tv is off.

One of my friends had a problem with his PSP, it froze during a firmware update, so he turned it off and it no longer works.  He called sony and they would not do anything without a receipt, he bought it from Sony paid with a credit card, he gave them the credit card number and they still would not do anything.

I emailed MS about downloading the Fall 07 update from their website because I "don't have broadband" and this was their response:

"We recommend that you obtain updates by connecting to Xbox Live. We feel this is the best option because the console will be updated automatically when new system software is released."

What part of "DON"T HAVE BROADBAND" did they not understand?

I got a similar response from Nintendo asking if there is another way to update your console besides doing it through broadband or through a game update.

The needing a receipt part of this is because Sony wants to make sure you LEGALLY obtained the PS3.
I heard a while back that there were UPS or FedEx employees that were stealing shipments of PS3s, maybe they are just protecting their company from helping thieves.
I honestly think there is no harm in needing proof of purchase for a rather expensive device.
I have 1 for my 360, PS3, InFocus SP5000 PJ, LG 22" LCD monitor, 17" MacBook Pro.
Basically you are asking for an issue without a receipt for a high dollar value item.

But just because there are people who did obtain it by less than legal means, doesn't mean the rest of us should have to suffer. I purchased my PS3 from a friend. I know he purchased it from the store, cause he called me the day he got it. When I bought it from him, however, I did not get a receipt. I have not voided the warranty by opening the case, so why should I be excluded from it (as the product was still paid for, and came with a warranty).

So if sony is protecting themselves by asking for a receipt?
Wheres the justice for the customer that bricks the ps3 while having a firmware upgrade or by updating to a firmware that only gives problems.
I have a 1st gen ps3 and everytime the ps3 is upgrading the firmware y pray that everything goes well.
