I sent my 360 in for repairs after only 3 months...it died. So, I went out and bought a PS3. Nice solid machine...I should have got one of these in the first place. The only problem I have is with the controls.

Anyway I purchased the PS3 with 40GB of space for 399.99
When asked the salesman told me it would play PS1 and 2 games. I asked because I plan to purchase Final Fantasy 7 which I've heard so much about.

After I bought the unit a friend told me only the 60 or 80GB playstation 3 will play older games. Is that right?

Go get your money back since the salesman LIED to you. Here's the quick rundown:

60/20 GB PS3 models support playback of ALL PSX/PS2 discs (hardware on board)
80 GB PS3 models support a large handful of PSX/PS2 discs (software emulation)
40 GB PS3 models WILL NOT play PSX/PS2 discs, at least as of yet.

http://en.wikipedia....i/PlayStation_3

he lied.

im a manager at a circuit city.. the 40 gig is not backwards compatible at all, in any shape form or fascion unless they release a mod or hack for it in the future. it was cut down so they could make the price cheaper to compete with the wii and 360

The 40GB has full PS1 compatibility. Final Fantasy 7 should play just fine.

It does not have any PS2 compatibility.

I am not sure why some of you are claiming the 40GB does not play PS1 games.
A simple look at the Sony site would have confirmed that you can

That's the fault of our co-conspirator: Miss Information. I do know that many places have info saying PS1 games aren't compatible, however it explains the reason for the upscaling options remaining.

I just talked to Best Buy, seems the guy who sold me the unit may not have lied....I asked if Final Fantasy 7 would work in the PS3 I was purchasing (it's a version 1 game). The guy (I talked to just a few minutes ago) told me the 40GB will play version 1 games but not version 2. And the 60 and 80 models that were compatible are no longer available. The Best Buy rep also told me there was a 80GB model bundled with a game (forget what game he said) coming out soon but it too will not handle PS2 games.

I'm so confused.

The 80GB model was previously bundled with Motorstorm. In the US, it will be re-released with Metal Gear Sold 4 and a Dual Shock 3 controller.

Yeah, I heard about two bundles with the 80GB model, a Dualshock 3 controller, and a game. One was MGS and the other was GT5P. With GT5Ps release right around the corner and no official word yet it appears to be just rumor for now.

also like clarify that the 40gb version will NEVER play ps2 games...dont give ppl false hope. The ps3 is simply just not powerful enough to play back ps2 games on its own, or atleast not at suitable standards.

That's not true at all. Sony themselves said it was possible through software BC, but they weren't interested in allocating resources to develop it.

One of the 80GB models is mostly software BC and runs PS2 games just fine.

How could it not be powerful enough to run PS2 games, but run PS3 games?  blink.gif

What a lot of rubbish.
I don't know where you get that from but it is easily powerful enough to play back PS2 games via software emulation. The European 60gb model does not have hardware BC like the US 80GB

Agreed - ridiculous to think that the ps3 is not powerful enough to emulate the ps2.  And to say the 40gb ps3 will never support ps2 BC, is ignorant.  If sony decided to go the emulation route like MS, then the 40GB ps3 would thereby support ps2 games.  But currently it does not.

But i'm not sure what you mean about the european 60GB not having hardware BC... are you saying the european 60gb is the same as the north americas 40gb ps3?  Currently it is not possible for the ps3 to support ps2 BC solely on software emulation.  Regardless of what the HDD gb size is, there is only 3 different ps3, in reference to ps2 BC:

1) Full hardware ps2 BC - has the emotion chip and the other necessary ps2 chip sets

2) Part hardware ps2 BC - no emotion chip, but contains the other ps2 chip set

3) No ps2 BC - no emotion engine or any other ps2 chip sets

While you are correct that the ps3 could software emulate the ps2, your logic is wrong.  Emulation is an entirely different beast then games running on their native console.

The European 60GB has no full hardware chip set but has hardware to enable playback. technically it is not full software emulation but is classed as having BC via software.
To clarify the European 60Gb is not the same as the 40GB model. The point I was making is it is not the same as the 80GB model proving that emulation via software for PS2 games is perfectly possible. The machine does not have to have the full compliment of hardware as the 80GB does.
In fact as you pointed out it (40Gb Model) is capable  of BC via full software emulation if Sony so wanted.

yes, to be able to emulate hardware, you need a much more powerful system, (or some really awesome code) to do it. it might have been possible with ps1 (remember bleem for dreamcast??) but i think the ps2 is a much heftier system.

i'm pretty sure pouring finances and other resources isn't a huge priority for them since for most people BC isn't a huge selling point for people but an added bonus (as people that want BC usually will have a ps2 library with a ps2)... but i can be wrong about that

the bottom line for sony is that non BC and non full BC means that they will sell a couple more ps2's...
