80GB PS3 planned for the UK this summer?

Retailers have told CVG that they expect the 80GB PS3 - currently out in the US - to hit UK stores by the end of the summer.

UK cash and carry superstore chain, Costco, told a CVG reader that it was clearing out its supply of 40GB PS3 units in preparation for the arrival of the 80GB consoles some time soon. But it's not the only retailer expecting the bigger console in the near future.

A HMV staffer told us that, although he had been given no confirmed release date by the retailer, he expects the 80GB console will "very likely" hit the UK soon, especially considering the 40GB PS3's inability to play PS2 games. The 80GB model in the US does include the functionally to play PS2 games.

PS3 customer services offered a similar answer, saying that its head office hadn't yet sent word of an 80GB UK release, but went on to add that it "may come soon", although there was no set date. The advice was "keep an eye on the PlayStation website." We could imagine the person on the other end of the phone winking while saying it.

News to me.

I don't know any store in the US currently carrying 80GB units, they were phased out months ago.

I just bought an 80g here in Canada, walmart was the only store in my town that had any ps3's (4 80gs and no 40gs). This things are hard to find. Futureshop doesnt seem to list the 80g ps3s on their website.

The wording is not so good, but they are saying an 80Gb like the model that was released in the US.
This has been a plan for a long while (see my posts from way back).
BC and 80GB will arise from the ashes.

how much more is the 80gb version?
if its around $100 more than the 40gb version I don't see what the big deal is when you can get a 80gb HD for around 60 bucks, unless you love your ps2 games of course.

Not that I've been looking hard for one, but in general when I go to buy games I'll check out their inventory of PS3 units. All of the big box stores, Best Buy (Futureshop), Circuit City, Target, Walmart, and also Gamestop only carry the 40GB, at least in my area. Even their websites don't have them, tons of 40GBs.

I'm not hard up for an 80GB, but if they reintroduce them in the US when they launch in the UK I'd be interested in trading up for the BC.

The main thing a re-release of an 80gb model would  have is the ability to play PS2 games.
If you don't really need that faciltity then you don't need the 80GB.
I believe the PS3 will end up with 2 main distinct models one being the 80GB with BC
