Sony CEO: 200usd Blu-ray Players Coming

Everybody clamoring for a cheap Blu-ray player now that the format war is over might wanna bide their time with a sweet DVD upconverter--the $200-player Blu-ray cavalry is at least a year away, according to Sony Electronics CEO Stan Glasgow, who we talked to today in New York. "I don't think $200 is going to happen this year. Next year $200 could happen. We'll be at a $300 rate this year. $299 will happen this year."

No cheap Chinese-made players will be flooding the market to push it down either, not until the BDA decides to license the tech to them, and Glasgow implied it's gonna be a while before that happens. Anyone else wants a license? Sure. But not them, in part it was indicated, because of piracy concerns. Not that the price matters too much right now, since Sony is "struggling to keep up with the demand."

The mighty morphin' PS3 SKU--from 60GB to 40GB, backward-compatible or not--isn't going to stop shape-shifting. When asked "Will there also be another PlayStation with Blu-ray built-in? Glasgow answered that "there's going to be continual evolvement in the PlayStation line" before talking about feature upgrades with software.

The PS3 is a standalone player...by definition. all this nonsense claiming it is not is journalistic and marketing spin. Fact is if you want a standalone BR player only you can buy the PS3 and it does exactly that.
It would not make sense for Sony to artificially keep the price of their Standalone model high as they miss out on business who will not buy the PS3 as a player because they view it as a games machine.
Sony are not allowed to keep the price of all the other manufacturers machines high either So the strategy would not work .

Keep believing that my friend...Their last place in the console race and are using bd to up their sales...If there were a 200 dollar bd player i immagine their sales would drop even more...If they can offer ps3 for the price their offering it at they can offer a bd player for less they choose not to.  Not dumb buisness but it is shady...

The reason they don't offer the lower price on the BR players is simple . they are taking a hit on every PS3 sale. They can not afford to take that loss on everything they sell.
The price of Sonys BR players will not govern future BR players by other manufacturers. If you believe Sony can dictate to Matsushita and the like what they retail stuff at then you are beyond dreaming.
Sony have never been the cheapest manufacturer of anything. Price will drop on newer models when they start full production runs of the smaller Laser package. they still will not be the cheapest players.
