GDC: PS3 'the best platform' for small devs

From gamesindustry.biz:
Quote

Scott Steinberg, Sony Computer Entertainment America's VP of product marketing, has told GamesIndustry.biz that he believes the PlayStation 3 is the smart choice for any small developer wanting to get their games to an online audience.

Responding to the Microsoft keynote at the Game Developers Conference, Steinberg pointed to the section of the talk from Chris Satchell on the XNA platform, and explained: "it was interesting in the sense that what they were talking about we've sort of been doing for the last couple of years with PSN and giving smaller, start-up, entrepreneurial developers the chance to get in and make their games available on the PSN."

He went on to note that the online services for the PlayStation 3 were free to consumers, whereas to experience full functionality on the Xbox 360 users were required to pay for a Gold membership.

Foe-Hammer you hate PR's don't you? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Anyway, I dont think there is too much of a difference between both the systems... but online being free for Sony is both good & bad...I don't think the 'free' keyword is as important as they think...I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't mind paying a little bit of money, I certainly wouldn't mind... but thats just me, im sure a lot of people out there absolutly love it being free, i know my friends do

Yep, hes talking Grade A bullshit

Anyone can get XNA make games and get em on the marketplace, its straightforward and cheap, the PS3 is harder to code for, PSN has jack all on it anyway and free? since when did you need gold to go on live and buy stuff from the market place?

oh and "we've sort of been doing for the last couple of years with PSN " ...last couple of years? PS3 came out in November 2006 as i recall.. thats a year and 3 months...

i tell ya im not biased, i own all 3 consoles, but i foookin hate sony.. i love the machine but i hate sony... just... hate em... i mean MS make a tit of themselves all the time but sony are just dogs, they lie out of their asses all the time, always spouting crap that's never true or exaggerated or just to get attention (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grr.gif)

The point is, the 360 is A LOT easier to develop for.  Easier to develop for usually means less money spent and more suited for smaller companies.  Plus, I'm not sure how the ps3s online being free to consumers would help them over xbl.

Both systems are great in their own respect, but that is not the issue here.

I can't stand the crappy navigation system in the PSN.  It might just be me but every time I want to browse through the store its an excruciating experience.  The navigation system just flat out sucks.

I agree, it's a total mess.  One of my pet peeves is navigating through poorly designed web sites with a crappy user interface.  I hate PSN.  The content might be there... but it's frustrating getting to it.

Sorry Foe-Hammer I didn't mean my comment to be rude in any way, nor was my opinion on the matter directed to you (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I was just saying it seemed like you hated PR's, with a smiley face at the end meaning its no big deal (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

What I was just saying is from the consumers point of view, or atleast mine and my friends. I wasn't saying anything bad on the 360 or the PS3, alls I basically said was they both have their advantages, and the PS3's advantage might not be as good as people think (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I never took it as offensive, or directed towards me.  No worries.

I agree with you about both consoles.  I was just referring to the topic about the ps3 being better for small devs, when all i've heard was how costly it was to develop for the ps3, compared to the 360 (both consoles cost a lot to develop for, but the ps3 is supposed to be considerably more).  And i don't understand how having free online on the ps3 would make their job developing easier then it would on the 360 with xbl.

Compared to XBL the PSN is like an online community from the stone age. It's really that bad. I suspect Sony wanted to launch the PS3 with PS Home directly but wasn't able to finish it in time, so they hacked an ugly website together that could be accessed through the crappy PS3 browser. So like many other people I'd rather pay a small fee for a *good* system that I don't hate using than have a free system for which you need to be a sadomasochist to be able to enjoy using it.
