Sony sees easing of PS3 price pressure

Recent strong sales of higher-priced PlayStation 3 models may be an indication that Sony Corp does not need to cut prices of the flagship video game console soon, a U.S. executive said on Thursday.

When Sony lowered U.S. prices of the PlayStation 3 last November, it was surprised to see that consumers bought as many $500 models as $400 models, said Scott Steinberg, vice president of product marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America.

"So we're seeing that the hard-core gamer is not afraid to throw another $100 at the PlayStation 3 because the value proposition is so rich," Steinberg told Reuters in an interview.

Asked if that meant the pricing pressure posited by many analysts had not materialized, Steinberg said. "It's leading us to think so."

Sony still needs to drop their prices across the board by $100 to have mass adoption.  And they need to do it NOW.

Yeah, we wouldn't want the PS3 to do TOO well would we, Sony?   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

In order for the PS3 to do "too well" it needs to turn a profit. If they are barely turning a profit on the price now,  how much would they lose per console if they dropped it another $100. Attach rates on games aren't high enough right now to justify a hardware price drop.

I don't think theres a need for a pricedrop, with all the recent good news for Sony the last few months, they are in a very good position... I mean, theres been 3 factors in the PS3... 1) Games 2) Price 3) BluRay/Format War

We all know games are finally here, and we all know which format won, and the price has been dropped already, I think they are looking real good...

Sony had some bad press its first year, Games/Price/BluRay and with all the negativity, they still managed to outsell the 360 its first year. Blame it on whatever you want...Sony is looking good to a lot of people now, you can't deny that.

But of course, someone always has to disagree, so dont forget to read his reply below somewhere

$400 is still too much for mainstream adoption.

Just because you and I don't think it is, and see the value of it, doesn't mean the the majority of people do.

thats exactly it, even the people who would buy one as a cheap BD player are a minority. It still isnt worth £300 quid to me unless its white, has an 80gb HD, has DS3 and HD cables in the box and is fully backwards compatable.

I want this machine to play great games on, and AFAIK there still isnt any exclusives that really grab me unfortunatly (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)  sure theres a bunch of great multiplat games, but the 360 will ALWAYS win that war for me, i just love them acheivements and the controller.

maybe 09 will bring me around (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

i think a price drop would be a wise move, especially if MS do release a DB add on. because then they would be up shit creek without a paddle. I mean the BD drive is the one really appealing thing to me right now.

Foe-Hammer, I always try to realize I might not be the majority in what I say, I'm not some teenager who thinks whatever my opinion is is what most people think (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I'm just saying, for me personally, thats how it looks. With recently great sales of the PS3 every week for the past few months you'll see they have outsold the 360 (Barely), so obviously the PS3 is picking up even without the price drop/games... So I'm simply going off that, Do they need one when they are already doing so good? I don't think so...

"$400 is still too much for mainstream adoption"
I agree. I personally think the price for mainstream adoption is $200-$300. I just don't think the PS3 needs to be there right now since they are doing so good with how they already are (They just need to hurry and release those games everyone is waiting for)...

I think they should drop the price in the holiday of 2008

EDIT: Grim d, I gotta agree with you there, If Microsoft were to release a BluRay add-on, then yes, I think the PS3 would need a pricedrop.

A blu-ray add on would do no better or worse then the HD-DVD add on did.  What they need to do is have a BR player built in their elite sku.  And preferably one with at least a 4x read speed.  The 1 or 2x BR drive in the ps3 is too slow.

If they had this i wouldn't hesitate paying up to $550, even though my premium 360 is doing fine.

One of the main gripes people had with the PS3 was the high price which was associated with having BR built in. At launch had the 360 had HD DVD built in it would have hampered sales. As a single model addition now it could well work.
Sony took the gamble and are now picking up pace. I don't think they need a price cut at this moment although it certainly never hurts to lower the price.
There is no major loading speed difference between Hd on PS3 and HD via a Toshiba standalone in my case.
