(USA) NPD: PS3 Overtook 360 In January

From gameinformer.com:

January was an especially good month for the PlayStation 3, as evidenced by sales figures released by the NPD Group. The system is continually hyped as being the best Blu-Ray player on the market, which might have helped boost sales, though its increasingly impressive 2008 lineup certainly didn't hurt things for Sony, either.

Here are the complete NPD lists:

Hardware
Wii--274,000 units
PLAYSTATION 3--269,000 units
Xbox 360--230,000 units

they're all pretty close

though to be fair the sales for both the 360 and Wii were limited (and still are limited) by manufacturing and not by actual consumer demand.

Case and point... my 360 died today (finally) so I went out looking to buy an Elite to replace it. 28 stores and 5 hours later I came home empty handed... in my journey I saw:

0 Wiis
4 Xbox 360 Arcade Units
2 Xbox 360 Pro Units
0 Xbox 360 Halo Units
0 Xbox 360 Elite Units

and 3 or more of every PS3 version in every store.

from the few clerks that commented it would seem that this has pretty much been the situation since the holidays. One Gamestop clerk commented that "Elites are harder to find than Wiis" this same store also said that they were getting a shipment of 2 Elites the following week and that I should get there at 11 when the shipment comes in because I was the 15th call he'd got that day from people looking to buy them.

Online shopping was equally grim with everyone sold out/backordered except for Gamestop.com and jr.com

so I ended up ordering one online.

Still I could have walked home with a 40, 60, or 80GB PS3 from the very first store I entered.

Judgement needs to be made on figures in the last quarter of the year, not based on a single month. Sony will need to improve those figures every month. Figures for worldwide sales need to be taken into account as well.

Having looked online there are plenty of other 360 models available but not the Elite. Seems the Elite is very popular. makes me wonder if MS shipped less as they expected less demand for the higher priced of the range.
The elites and all models are plentiful in the UK.
Sorry about your console mate. My launch one is still going strong as is the new one I bought.
Are you going to hang on for a re-stock of Elite?

I agree that they need to look more at quarterly sales as opposed to month to month (or worse: week to week)

A month or week selling slightly better than your competitors wont win you any market races.

Sony is in a good spot right now and they could make the most of it ... but only if they act.

They have a small collection of decent exclusives now, they just won the HD disc format war, and we've been hearing lots about how manufacturing costs have been cut almost in half.

with MGS and GTAIV around the corner and both MS and Nintendo low on supplies it's a prime opportunity for Sony to make a big move like a $50-$100 price cut across the board.

That will spur sales for their console as a BRD player and those who want to play the upcoming releases and can't find the other consoles will have a much easier time choosing the PS3 as their platform for this generation.

-----
As for my own console.... I ordered an Elite online and had it shipped overnight, it should get here Monday or Tuesday. I'm shipping my old one back to MS anyway. I figure I can tool around with the old one and try out some of the homebrew that is starting to pop up.

I've wanted an Elite for some time but couldn't justify buying one... this just gave me an excuse.

I'll probably buy a PS3 in the near future since the format war is over and I'll need a Blu-Ray player though with the rumored new units coming soon as well as the rumored price drop around the release of MGS and GTA, I think I'll hold on a little longer.
