Is PS3 Backwards Compatibility Dead? Maybe Not

From kotaku.com:

When PlayStation Network director Eric Lempell was asked by the mag if the now BC-less console kills any chance of offering PS2 games via the PlayStation Store, as it does for original PlayStation games, Lempel said "We haven't talked about that yet, but there are possibilities through technology and software emulation to make that possibles."

Lempell chose not to talk about "specific plans at this point" but that doesn't mean we can't hope. And pray. And start online petitions.

This to me still is one of the most disappointing things about the Ps3. Who wouldn't want to play their PS2 games up-converted on their HD tv's. With such an incredible back log of games I feel like sony really shot themselves in the foot on the backwards compatible front. I do understand that ps2's are cheap and available so why bother but say your ps2 burps up its soul and you have a ps3 now your left to buy another ps2 or let your games rot. So for me yeah i hope they figure this out somehow.

It could really save people money if the PS3 was fully backwards compatible.

I never owned a ps2, and have the 80gig ps3 model.  I owned an xbox and now an xbox 360, but bought the ps3 for the bluray player (and well it game with extra feature of being a game console).

anyways I like that it can play ps2 games, I know people knock the 80 gig modem, but my ps2 playing experience on it has been fine, and I think its a shame they don't continue it.

I only have so much shelf space under the tv smile.gif

Software BC will come to the 40 gig after all the 80's are sold out, I predict it right now!

Wasn't there one chip or something (not a big chip) that they still had to include on the 80gig to make the software emulation work?  I know the 60 gig was all hardware, but the 80 gig still had one chip on it, i don't think the 40 gigs have that chip, so they would have to retool the software emulation to get it to work.

120Gb model on it's way with BC and all the bells and whistles. as soon as stocks are cleared.
Emulating every game via software will cost more to do.
My prediction

If I remember right I think the Emotion Engine was still inside the 80Gb
and the PS1 components were removed in favor of emulation.

Purely software emulation isn't that simple.  There is not going to be some miracle emulation software that will work for the majority of ps2 games for the ps3.  It takes time and effort on many individual games to make it work... of which MS and us customers know all to well with xbox emulation on the 360.

But this info is to be taken with a grain of salt.  There needs to be rumors and hints with a little more weight before i'll consider it possible.
