Is it games or Blu-Ray driving the PS3 resurgence?

Is it the rising Blu-Ray hype that is driving sales?  Or a baser aspect of the techno-toy that is beginning to spur on the return of the PlayStation brand.

In my opinion the answer is a bit of both, sales have steadily increased arguably in line with the rise of HD TV.  But similarly world-wide sales of the Wii and Xbox 360 have also increased almost in parallel.

The big jumps in PS3 sales have occurred on a regional basis because of significant software releases, for example, in Japan there were spikes of PS3 sales for the release of Virtua Fighter 5, Gundam Musou, Hot Shots Golf 5 and more recently for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

Amongst the differing tastes of Western regions on the other hand, it is hard to find a PS3 exclusive that became a console seller.  Unlike Halo 3 for Xbox 360, games such as Lair, Heavenly Sword and even Uncharted: Drake's Fortune caused only minor ripples of increased hardware sales.

No, the single significant event that has started the resurgence of sales in the PS3, which now matches the Xbox 360 world-wide, was the price adjustment in early November .  Across all regions, the spike in sales and continued success of the machine has been simply due to making it cheaper.

It doesn't take a genious to know if you drop the price, more people will buy. The PS3 made what we thought was a high price for the 360 seem very reasonable. Now the PS3 is the same price as a standalone bluray player. It makes more sense more people are buying, because now you have grandmas and grandpas buying them because it's a 'better value'. They get their bluray, and the grandkids get their gaming console.. two birds, one stone.

I didn't care at all about Blu-ray when I bought mine because I was backing HD DVD at the time.

Warhawk was the real drive behind my purchase because I like that type of MP and there really isn't anything like it on the 360.

It is nice to have though, especially now that HD DVD is tanking. Everyone knows that Sony used the PS3 as a trojan horse for Blu-ray and it paid off for their format. It's left the gaming side neglected unfortunately and hopefully they can now refocus their energy towards games.

Sony doesn't make plasmas, but Mitsubishi was running a deal with their TV's a few weeks ago. Buy the 57, 65, or 73 inch DLP TV's (the best way to game) and get a free PS3... Samsung ran a similar deal earlier with a free 360, but no HD DVD.

Ok. I didn't check if they were Plasma or LCD, was informed by Harvey Normal that they were.  Apologies.
