I've had good results with this one BUT be warned, in my experience they only work with certain drives on certain xbox's, I've had some faulty adapters aswell. Being as they're so cheap I'd order a spare just in case.

Thanks zx6r6. Have ordered both and will see what works.
Most likely try a 1TB WD or Seagate drive.
(box is an old v1.1 with TSOP flash and INDBIOS 5003 on it, but have 2 others to try also)
Cheers.

For what its worth I put a Western Digital Green 1tb (8mb cache) into a 1.3 with Ind 5003 bios the other day and it works well, it runs incredibly cool and is very quiet, almost silent. I'm that impressed I'm tempted to replace my Maxtor 1tb with one!

No shouting at me if it doesn't work for you though! wink.gif

Awesome, that's the drive I was planning on getting too.
Nice to know someone guarantees it will work perfectly for me, hehe  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)
No doubt a couple weeks until I get the adapters, but will post results.
... I hate waiting ...

Just an update for anyone interested, I tried the adapter I mentioned a few posts back (12537) and booted fine, ran old AID 4.0 disc and set it up with XBMC.  I just used a 250Gb SATA drive I had spare for a test. XBMC boots fine.
Could anyone suggest a decent (quick if possible) stress test for it? Like to do this before getting the 1TB drive installed.
FWIW I have a TSOPped v1.1 with INDBIOS 5003 and a PC samsung drive hooked up (original samsung drive not perfect reading).
Cheers.

I have modded quite a few boxes (400-500) and I too would like to get to the bottom of the problem with the errors on the sata drives. For what it's worth i have over 100 adaptors bought from ebay and locally and have tried a bunch of different sata hdd drives and I have found that the 1.6 xboxes seem to give more positive results overall. In particular I have one xbox that has a modded 8164b dvd drive on a 1.6 m/board which will run almost any combination of drive and adaptor with no glitches noticed so far. All my mods are running DuoX2 chips and loaded with XBMC AIDS (latest version). I have no idea what the problem is, but i know that when my 8164B drive with adaptor fires up it seems to give the hdd time to prepare itself. Or not... I don't know....maybe there needs to be a bios developed that has the timer delays built in (if that's even possible) but i wouldn't know where to start. just my 2c (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I am using WD 640GB and 1TB drives

I mostly get error 21

These ones are what I mostly use (notice the absence of the two big capacitors) and they seem to work on all the Western Digital and Seagate drives I have used so far. Between 300GB and 1TB, no particular model, just the che3apest one on the day tongue.gif
It seems only some xboxes will work (i just set up a 1.1 that runs flawlessly with a 640GB WD) but I have not had a particular HDD or adaptor (unless it was faulty) that wouldn't work in my main 1.6 'setup'  xbox  smile.gif

Just a small update. Have isolated one issue. I had a 1.6 console that refused to boot properly with a 1TB WD10EADS Caviar Green 32MB drive with the lid on and kept throwing an error 21. I ended up flattening out the tabs inside the lid (which I think was off an earlier model, they are not bent down on the newer ones) so they didn't earth the HDD and now it boots every time smile.gif

Just wanted to say a big thankyou to everyone who has posted all these useful comments on here and wanted to share my results.  I got the ide adaptor which absorb mentioned in the previous post (took about 2 weeks to come in the post) and the hdd I used was 1TB WD10EADS Caviar Green 32MB.

Using xboxhdm_1.9 I formatted the disk in the usual way and then used xbpartition to distribute the storage evenly (although it said I only had something like 475gb in drive F and G - thought it should have been nearer 495 but not to worry).  I have tested it on the following xboxes:

xbox v1.0 - working although occasionally G drive isn't available and there seems to be a 50/50 success rate of booting up, if it doesn't boot it will either be an error 13 or 21.

xbox v1.1 - working really well. Only slight problem is that I occasionally get an error 13 or 21 on boot but I'd say 4 out of 5 times it boots perfect.

xbox v1.6 - same as v1.1 (although I didn't thoroughly test it, but the few times I did it seemed to be the same results as v1.1).

All the above results were based on having the lid off, if I screw the lid on then I cannnot get it to boot - think it's error 13.  I am currently using v1.1 with lid placed on but not fully clipped down into place.  Oh and I don't know if it helped or not but I did stick some cloth tape between the hdd and adaptor so the solder points wouldn't get earthed.  Hope that helps someone out there.

Sounds a bit like the adapter might have a loose join or something in it: it may be the lid is pushing it into a position it doesn't like.

Though it could be that the grounding is extending to the lid; perhaps if you stuck some paper between those it'd improve matters?

Wow that quick, thanks for the reply.  Looks like you're right about the adaptor, I've tried new cables and taping off the metal parts of lid to make sure of no earthing but still get error 13 when lid is on.  Can you recommend any particular brand with the adaptors or is it just pot luck with what you get?  Maybe I'll order another couple of adaptors from ebay and see what comes.

In an earlier post in this thread I linked to the adapter that eventually worked for me. I suspect it's all pot luck, though.

Thanks I'd somehow missed that link (after reading all 13 pages 3 or 4 times over it all gets a bit much for my poor little brain!).  Just ordered one of those adaptors from dealextreme, will let you know how I get on when it gets here... could be a bit of a wait with them from previous experience.....
