Look in the thread of lockable HDD's pinned at the  top of the forum.  You didnt mention if it was the special edition version of the regular but I locked my non-special edition one just fine.

Regular has 2meg cache Special has 8meg of cache. I will imagine you have the former, but I think they both lock fine, how about the hd list and western digitals site

A better statement might be "Most people (the cool ones) prefer a maxtor hd for their modded Xbox's than WD"  Frankly, in the real computer world, I would never choose Maxtor over WD.  Of course everyone is different, its just been my experience in the PC industry since 1995 or so that WD is a good choice.  I do have Maxtor 120's in both my Xbox's and they are great, the 7200RPM version with 2MB Cache, lock and unlock fine with Config Magic.
