Config Magic Failed To Unlock Hdd
« on: April 14, 2008, 02:28:00 AM »

Hi,

how is your xbox modded?

Some softmods use a virtual eeprom. If configmagic gets the hddkey from that eeprom, it might fail when it tries to disable the harddisk security.

So, it is important to have the correct contents of your xbox eeprom.

You can use configmagic to get those.
You can use the Evox dashboard for that.
You can use a tool written by xman954 for that.

The virtual eeprom can be turned off by placing a file in the e:\nkp11 folder or the root of the E partition. It should be called EEPROM_off.bin and the contents doesn't matter.

You can check the eeprom.bin file on a pc with the Liveinfo beta 3 program.

You can unlock a xbox harddisk with the xboxhdm package on a pc, or you can use the dos tools.

regards.

Yeah I have a softmod. So if I understand correctly, create a file called EEPROM_off.bin, and place it in the root of e?

I guess when you say

Hi,

if the nkp11 folder doesn't exist, than you should place the EEPROM_off.bin file in the E root folder.
(It is only used with the nkpatcher11)

I thought the configmagic program had an option to backup the xbox eeprom as I often read from people..
we backuped the xbox eeprom with configmagic.....
You can also use the evox dashboard backup option to backup the xbox eeprom, and you can also use a tool xman954 created for that purpose. Google is your friend to find it.
After the creation of the eeprom.bin file, you will need to ftp it over to your pc.

regards.

Oh if thats what you're saying, then yeah the back up option is there.whats the purpose of ftping it to the pc? For use in xboxhdm?

I put that bin file in the root of e, but nothing changed, it sill fails to unlock. I guess xboxhdm is my only option?

Yes, you rename it to "EEPROM.BIN". It goes in the "EEPROM" folder.

Try loading the backup via LiveInfo. That'll give you some idea as to whether it's your EEPROM or not. If you failed to get the correct file, then you'll have no way of re-locking your drive when you finally get the lock off (and a softmodded console won't boot without a locked drive!).

SOLVED

In the end some of that stuff was just over my head, I dont know if I wasnt using the boot cd right or if its because I dont have a floppy drive to use the standard boot disc that I could never get hddisabl to work. Also even I dont know how to work live info, or how to tell if i had the correct eeprom info in the first place.

Anyway what I did was just download Slayers EvoX Installer, and used the unlock option, and viola, currently using my 300gb hd on my pc. Dont really care about being able to boot this on my xbox again, since like I mentioned Im stripping that xbox for parts.

Peace, thanks for all the suggestions.
