well to sonys credit a large emount of dust can block the vents and couse the system to overheat cousing death. however unlike a pc you cant open up a ps3 and blow it out with a compresser. so it should not void the warrenty.

It doesn't void the warranty. See the link in the above post.

Yeah i agree, someone should take lessons on how to look after their stuff, expensive PS3's not being looked after puzzles me to say the least.

On the other hand, i don't see what the deal is with Sony not fixing it, thats like buying a PC from PC world and then taking it back and saying sorry its full of dust were not fixing that under warranty. How can you help prevent it?

Fair enough, the outside of the case should have had a clean, but the insides would be no better for it, if the outer case is a risk to health, then i'm sure as hell the insides are aswell, in which case this probably applies to every other PS3 thats sent in for repair.

I'm getting my PS3 this christmas from my fiancee, while i consider myself to take good care of my gear, i hope i don't run into any problems like this in the event it breaks down.

You will be fine. the Dust story  and non repair has already been dismissed as not true.. The lengths some will go to for 5 minutes of internet fame (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

heh well anything gets pretty dammed dusty when its just sitting doing knothing for a year. i admit thow thats pretty dam bad you would think he would at least clean out his center every cuple months weeks or days so at least the case wouldent be dusty. knnothing i own has that mutch dust on it even my old dreamcast thats being stored. i pull it out once and a wile clean it and play it to make shure it still works in fact recently replaced the av cables they got a bit weak over the years. same for my orignal xbox but i do need to order some new cables for it they have gone bad. but i use the old xbox has a meda center pc xbmc so it gets more used time then the dc does. in case you havent notced i dont sell off my old consoles. i have quite a few.
