The software emulation has given me no problems. I don't see this as an issue.

So, at some point will the 60gig models disable the engine and also use software?  That would be fantastical!

I wouldn't be terribly surprised if they already did that.

^ not true at all. I bet your PC uses a software DVD decoder. With software there is more control, and you can add features and enhancements later. Such as upscaling.

I think that software emulation has the best cost benefit approach in the long run as the emulation engine can mostly be reused in future consoles and uses a fixed cost rather than variable (per unit) cost model.

Seeing PS1 games like castlevania on the x360 make me wonder if we will see xbox 1 games as arcade games on the next xbox. It really depends on storage advances in the next 3 years.

or just more advanced compression of files

Very true i stand corected, there is something to be said for having a game play exactly as the original did. I would also lean tword things like mame games and nintendo games being emulated but for large difficult games like halo 2 i would still say hardware is better. I prefer to play halo 2 on my xbox because it just plays better than on my 360.

I wonder with the Software emulation they can add features such as Hi-Res filters, and texture smoothing much akin to the PSX / PS2 emulators for PC.

I mean in the PS2 had a texture filter renderer for the hardware portion when it ran PSone titles, unfortunately it did not work very well.

As I can run several PSone titles on my PC via one of those PSX emulators and the texture filtering / hi-res upscaling really shows a true difference and there is hardly any distinct jagged edges because of the benefit of the anti-aliasing and graphical filters added.

And since the PC emulators are software emulators themselves, Hopefully this would open the door for potentially similar said features with the PSX / PS2 emulation on the PS3.

I already have several titles in mind that I occasionally play that would greatly benefit from this.

Actually i saw a thread at gametrailers.com that showed exactly that, they said it worked on some games and not others when the update with upscaling for ps2/ps1 games came. i suspect the reason it didnt anti-alias or filter textures in some games was because some were being emulated while others were still running on the ps2 hardware then just being upscaled to hi-def. I suppose that with each firmware update the emulator takes over the task of running more games while the ps2 hardware takes care of the ones that are still having problems. In time, i believe the ps2 hardware will be completely disabled, probably around the time the 80gb ps3 comes out.

That is true as well, when dealing with underpowered systems.

Early DVD enabled PCs used hardware decoders, because the current generation CPU at the time, couldn't decode, run the OS, and multitask all at the same time. Once the CPU became strong enough, PC manufacturers opted for the cheaper and more manageable software rendering of DVDs.

I am not 100% sure that PS3 is strong enough to emulate every PS2 game, but at the same time, there is no need to multitask and minimal OS overhead.

i could be wrong, but i dont think this is still 100% software emulation, i think the ps2 GPU is still in the ps3 with only the EE chip taken out.

i think that explains how a hardware company can get so many more games BC compared to a software company.

i have said it before and i'll say it again, i dont really buy my next gen systems to play in the past so this makes little difference to me.

The only value BC holds for me is if they boost the graphics at the same time.

I'd buy a PS3 in a heart beat if I knew it would render my PS2 games in 720p with 4xMSAA or better.

upscaling doesn't cut it, I've got other devices that can do that.

I'm actually kind of curious why they didn't just do emulation to begin with since the emulator they developed seems to work fine.  Seems like a terrible waste of money to design it in the system, remove it from the system, and write firmware that can deal with both cases.
