Idea On How To Format Large Hard Drive With 64k Clusters
« Reply #45 on: March 24, 2008, 05:00:00 PM »

To all who have been following this thread:

We've had a breakthrough with this and now have what we believe to be a fully functional program that formats with 64k clusters.  I have a 750GB hd full up to 700GB all on drive F and have experienced no noticeable file corruption.  This means that none of us ever have to deal with a drive G ever again (if we don't want to).  Drive G can now safely be considered entirely unnecessary as up to 1TB of data can be stored on F.  Now, the day an internal IDE drive bigger than 1TB is released then we will need 128k clusters, but until then...

After we work out a few more kinks we hope to have the new version uploaded to the usual places shortly.

Thanks to Bomb Bloke for figuring out the code and lordvader for compiling and testing it.

This is fantastic news and a real breakthrough for the xbox 1 scene smile.gif

I always knew it was possible but unfortunately I'm a noob when it comes to editing code.

Thank you to everyone who helped create this beerchug.gif

QUOTE(imisim @ Mar 27 2008, 10:01 AM) View Post

I am just wondering what is the benefit of having just one huge partition comparing with 2 seperates one? I am currently using the Seagate 750G with two equal partitions  formatted by XBP with 32kb clusters.

XBMC will allow you to add the sources from different partitions so your games, movies, etc... will be organize as if they have came from one huge partition.  The process is so transparent you won't even know that you have 2 partitions to begin with.  I can't quite see the benefit?

Well granted it's not a huge benefit, but personally I don't like dealing with two partitions at all.  If I have F:\Movies and G:\Movies, and I want to delete, say "The Ring Two" (horrible movie), I don't like to have to look through F and G to find it, I want to just go to my F:\Movies and know it's there.  Or if I get a new movie, I don't like to have to decide which drive to put it on.  I just wanna throw it in my Movies directory and be done with it.

It's just one of those small annoyances we don't have to deal with anymore.  It's like having to spin in a circle every morning before you get dressed.  Annoying?  Not really.  But eventually you start to think, what is the point of this.

The downside is that with one huge partition, you have less drive space to play with overall.

Save cluster space if you have xbox games on the drive: Look into ISO mounting.

You can save xbox games as xISOs on the hard drive and use nkpatcher(softmod) tools to mount them, or xman's recent bios patches for modchips (works on some bioses) to mount.

woah.. iso mounting?

what about loading times wont that kill the speed?

i have a 500gb hdd with 70 sumthin xbox games on it, and some of them (KotOR) have hundreds upon hundreds of voice tracks that kill my space.

my box is all about performance (and a little about looks..my sig) i have a ata 133 cable so my games load a little faster, but im running out of room on my hdd

On average, you'll waste (cluster size * files / 2) of space.

Some games have a lot of files. Some only have a few. Movies are the only form of content that "usually" uses large file sizes.

Do these ISO mounting tools let you mount multiple archives as one drive? If not then that's a problem; many X-Box games are larger then 4gb (the largest individual filesize FATX will accept).

DVD 2 XBOX has a iso format option when it asks what format u want to rip them in. i never tried it but i dont think they would make the option if it wouldnt work for most of the games out there.

im going to try it right now.
and nkpatcher is a whole different softmod isnt it. like i would have to return my box to origional state. the install the new one?

if its just an app that would b just a pain in my @$$ to go to my dask load the app and then wait for the app to mount the iso of choice

ill b back w/ the results in a minute

ps cluster size is a problem 4 people who have games cause many games have hundreds of files that are small

to rip a game in iso format first you have to open the dvd2xbox.xml file and enable it (near the end of the page)

then i tried to rip Shenmue 2  (5000 mb) and it was going fine until about 4% was complete.  was running at about 3.4 mb per sec then dropped to less than one. the filename it created was   shenmue2.part00.iso
so mu guess is that right before the 4 gb limit it splits the file and creates a new one to finish in. so the softmod or app needs to mount multiple images on a single drive or ur just gonna be limited on the games you can play (no halo2 4.5 gb, not that i care)

and still wont there be an issue with loading speeds?

i also tried to rip the first prince of persia game thich il only like 2 gb and it did the same thing, slowed down after 4% was complete. i let it go and finally shut it down at 23% complete at a speed of ~ .13 mps.

whats wrong?

CODE

ClusterSize = (PartTbl.TableEntries.LBASize > 0x20000000) ? 0x8000 : 0x4000;

to

CODE

ClusterSize = (PartTbl.TableEntries.LBASize > 0x20000000) ? 0x8000 : 0x4000;
ClusterSize = (PartTbl.TableEntries.LBASize > 0x40000000) ? 0x10000 : ClusterSize;

A very minor thing that only occurs if you uses Xbpartitioner to format all partitions. To be consistent with the other changes Lordvader and Bomb bloke have made.

By the way this had not been released to the usual places. Are there any problems that we should be aware of? I'm making the same changes to mkfs.fatx in xboxhdm so that we can finally rebuild F drive with 32k/64k clusters with xboxhdm as well.

Well spotted.  smile.gif

LordVader and I actually continued this discussion via PM, and I ended up noticing that issue and then making a few other changes as well (such as a more reliable clustersize autodetection system).

I'm not sure if the new version works or even compiles however. On the flip side of the coin I now have the ability to create XBEs of my own so if someone with a bigass drive (over 512gb) would like to try the new code...

Just checked on xbins and there is no sign of the updated version, can someone post a rapidshare or megashare link for the new version please.

Thanks
