Post Hdd Upgrade Problems
« on: March 01, 2008, 01:31:00 AM »

I just upgraded o a 500gb Matxtor HD, ran the upgrade wizard on my Xenium chip, copied the F drive over to my new drive, and now some of my games won't load. Movies hang at launch from XBMC as well. Also, when entering the "Videos" screen in XBMC, I get a blank screen. I can back out and it works the second time.

The games in question hang when launching them from EvoX as well. I suppose my next step will be to delete the games and re-rip them, and re-install the newest build of XBMC.

That is, unless somebody has a magical answer to what might be going on.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

Are you using dvd2xbox (v0.7.8) to copy games?  What version of XBMC are you using?  The newest build atm is:  T3CH XBMC 2008-02-24 SVN rev11787

A little more info i have discovered:

My new drive no longer has X Y or Z partitions, just C, D (DVD drive), E, and F (which is 400 gb). I'm guessing this is the main problem.

Also, I cannot save games- I get a "Save failed" message. My save games still show up in the MS dash, and I can load games.

I also discovered that the games that won't load are those that I have played recently, leading me to believe it's a cache issue.

Basically, what I need to know now is how do I create extra partitions?

I am using DVD2XBOX and the 2/21/08 XBMC build.

Some games will run from the DVD, while others won't. For example, Arena Football hangs on startup when run from the DVD, while NHL Hitz 2003 works just fine (and saves as well). I am now confident this is a problem with the missing partitions. Now I just need to figure out how to fix it!

What did you use to format the drive initially?

I used the Hard Drive Upgrade Wizard from the Xenium OS.

Can I create the cache partitions with xbpartition?

Now that I think of it, I never formatted the new drive before I started the upgrade wizard.

Also, further inspection shows that I have C, E, F, and Q partitions. X Y and Z partitions show up when FTPing to the Xenium OS, but not when in XBMC or EvoX.

I would reformat right now, but I want to make sure that's the problem first, as it took 50 hours to copy all 80 gb over from my old HD the first time.

Some dashboards hide X/Y/Z in order to discourage users from putting files on them.

(Since those partitions get wiped on a regular basis as games claim them for cache storage, you can see the point to this).

You will need to reformat your F: anyway. There's a bug where if you try to put more then 256gb onto a partition that wasn't formatted correctly (ie. with XBPartitioner), you get massive data corruption.

How much free space do you have on E:?

Is your system time correct?

Now my problem is that I can't format my drive at all. I get errors and "failed to format" messages. This is frustrating. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)

As Bomb Bloke has suggested, this is probably an issue with the large F drive not being formatted with Xbpartitioner. You will need to format it with that before you can continue.

You say you can't format the drive, what are you trying to format it with?

It shouldn't take more than 10-12 hours for that. You would be better off re-ripping the games with the latest DVD2Xbox.

I have been trying to format it with the Xenium OS. As far as XBPartition, I'm not sure how I can run that on the new drive, as I can't FTP to the new drive anymore. Can I run it off of an .iso?

Here's what happened:

I originally upgraded to the new drive in Xenium OS 2.0 (beta).

After reporting the problems I had here, I updated to Xenium OS 2.3.1. On the menu I saw an option to "Repair 2.0 HDD Upgrade". Did that, got a message that it completed. Still had the same issues, so I went back to format the drive. However, I now get "Partition failed to format" error messages. When I try to run the upgrade wizard, it does nothing but throw errors.

My next step was to format the drive through EvoX using this evox.ini:

CODE

Section "Install Menu"
{
Item "Install New drive",@210
Item "MS Dashboard",ID_MS_Dash
Item "Reboot",ID_Quick_Reboot
Item "Power Off",ID_Power_Off
}

[Action_10]
Info "Install HDD - Xbox-Scene"
Warning "This will format all drives"
Warning "Make sure you have a backup of C & E"
Progress "Formatting drives"

ConfigSector "\backup\disk.bin"
Format c:
Format e:
Format f:
Format x:
Format y:
Format z:

That quickly completed. I went back to the Xenium OS and tried to upgrade and format, but got the same results.

I can't connect to the new drive via FTP anymore either.

I'm running out of options. I was thinking about trying to connect the drive to my PC and formatting in Windows, then seeing if it would format in XBOX after that.

Any ideas?

Why are you trying to format the drive at the moment? With the exception of F:, the other partitions should be fine. The console shouldn't work otherwise.

Can you not connect to EvoX's FTP service?

If you really want to re-format everything, grab a copy of Slayers.

I am currently downloading Slayers. The format through Evox apparently worked, because now my drive FRAGs when trying to boot. If I launch into Xenium OS, there are no partitions available to browse (only D:\ and xbox\ network show up when broseing for BIOS locations). I will let you know what happens with the Auto installer.

BTW, thanks for all of your help so far. I probably would have given up long ago if I didn't know there were people like you guys who know what's up to walk me through this stuff.

The console FRAGs? Doesn't it give an error screen? It should do if the FRAG is caused by your format.

Certainly if the drive is formatted, you should be able to see all the partitions the console has.

Ok. I am making some progress.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I burned a Slayer disc, and ran the "Full install rebuild Large HD" item. The install worked perfectly.

Now I need to know a couple things befor I proceed:

1) What do I need to do to ensure my F: drive is formatted properly;

and

2) What is the best way to get the contents of my old drive onto the new one once it has been properly formatted?

I am somewhat wary of using the copy partition tool in the Xenium OS, for obvious reasons.

(For the record, I was getting an error 13 when I was FRAGging).
